bike suggestions

Good thread...I'll be needing similar advice in a few weeks...the big difference for me is that my commute to work is extremely close and flat (Tempe), and I would ideally like to pick up road biking - BUT, there's a big mountain biking scene down there too, obviously. I'm not sure if I'll pick up one of each, a mixed-use bike, or what.

buy a 500$ hard tail bicycle, with an extra CHEAP set of wheels (used/from ebay/bike classified/etc) and mount thinner (ie 1.5") slick tires on them....swap for commuting vs weekend MTB
