Must be a fish thing (we share an avatar here); I use the engine to do most of the work while driving, but coming to a stop I engine down to 2nd. First gear is just too low, I wind up either slipping the clutch for five seconds or jolting down into first. With the amount of sand on the roads here, that's a good way to break the rear end free when you're going too slow to recover it, and with the idiot bovines that drive in this state it's a very short trip from dumping the bike at a stop sign to getting crushed under an SUV full of flatlanders.

downshifting/engine braking + manually braking and shift down to Neutral. I never shift into first unless i'm coming from a dead stop.

I always felt the jolt into first was too much for me. Shifting into second isn't nearly as bad.

its jolting because your going too fast when you entered 1st..

I usually stop at 2nd, but have known to hit the limiter (gear limiter) and realise im in neutral and then promptly shift up to 2nd.
That only happens if i havent ridden in a while.. because thats when im counting gears..
