Bike Questions

I'm interested in picking up a used Kawasaki Ninja 250R for driving around town and as the weather warms up I think it'll be a bit more enjoyable.

What I need to know is what classes to take and where to take them. I want to take a class first obviously for reasons such as learning how to ride it, but also to just get a feel and decide if a bike is something I want.

From what I've read the 250R is a pretty light bike and is good to learn on, any reason I shouldn't go with this bike?

Thanks! 🙂

ohh i love ninja 250's they are a lot of fun for around town.

a rider safety course is fine. call the DMV ans ask where they are taught.

There are no valid reasons why you should not start on the 250. I did, and many other people have, and it's absolutely the right way to go. It is not underpowered, it handles very well, it is very forgiving, and it can teach you alot about riding.

For classes, start here. You don't have a state listed in your sig.

<--- would rather not play around on a freeway 😛

Thanks for that link, found some places I could take it at!

How do you figure, when it was perfectly capable of hauling my 200 pound ass + my gear + a weekend's worth of luggage to 95 mph on I-95? It has no problem whatsoever with keeping up with traffic.

I took a MSF course....judging by how my gf can handle a Ninja 500 AND given the relative cost of a 250 springing for the 500 is a no brainer IMHO.

The 500 is 2 grand more than a 250, and considerably harder to find on the used market. I see 250's every week on craigslist. I don't think it's worth it unless you plan to keep it for a while. Meanwhile a used 250 can be sold for what you bought it for.

Just take a motorcycle safety course as it is pretty fun. I'd personally stay away from sports bikes for daily driving (kills the back). My 1984 Honda Nighthawk served me well till I went into a cornfield at 130MPH.

I just called them up and registration started last Thursday - they're booked through August 🙁

What other options do I have? I was hoping on taking lessons next month so I could get a bike to ride around in over the summer...

The 250 is a fun bike. I used to run endurance rallies on my K1100RS with a guy who rode a 250 Ninja (painted like a John Deere Tractor no less), he always finished well. I think he even ran it in the '02 Ironbutt but I would have to check.

Buy it and ride the heck out of it, nothing stopping you from moving up later.

EDIT - if MSF is booked (and they always are) check your local clubs. I know my local BMW club has several MSF instructors and runs closed classes throughout the summer (closed meaning it is open to club members first then anyone to fill.) If you strike out there try a Harley Dealer, they have their own version of MSF and while it is a bit more expensive it is basically a copy with an emphasis on cruiser riding.
