Volpe vs. 520

I want to use them for training and over the summer I'm planning a trip from Seattle to Los Angeles. I can get the 520 for $1100 and the Volpe is $900.

At the moment, I'm leaning towards the Volpe. I figure I can use the extra $200 for extra parts, which I would probably do to the Trek anyway.

What do you think?

I don't ride road but I do ride mtb. I'd say try each bike out and see how it fits you. This will be important. Also look at the components you're getting with each bike. It's always better to pay the extra $$ upfront for upgraded components than having to buy them later (they'll cost more later).

Edit: After looking at the specs for each bike, I'd say the Trek is the better deal. The components (drail, shifters, etc.) appear to be of a better quality. That's probably why the price is a little higher.

It's made to be a touring/commuter bike, so they added a carrier to make it look more appealing to the customer

My 520 took me coast to coast self-supported with not a single mechanical problem. Two thumbs way up. I think it's definitely built tougher than the Volpe. Plus made in the USA.

Last time I bought a bike a few years ago I went with a Bianchi because I really liked the softer ride & better road-feel then all the other models I rode including a couple Treks, but the real key here is that you need to go ride a bunch of different bikes yourself to see what you like... just because I preferred the Bianchi doesn't mean you will.

Also I have to disagree about choosing a bike based on the tack-on stuff ... the frame is the most important single component by far.

I own the 520 and it is an outstanding bike- I've done several 2K+ mile trips on it and it has taken everything tossed at it without any mechanical problems whatsoever. The best advice I can give you is take whatever bike you purchase to a reputable bike shop and have it "fitted" to your physical type...money well spent.
