Bike ettiquette...

Mrvile

Lifer
Where do people normally bike, and which way is accepted and most polite? I'm not a big biker (I might become one soon), so I normally just bike around the neighborhood, and in developments I bike in the street, but what about on large, 4+ lane streets that don't have a "sideline" for bikers?

not bashing on ppl but i hate it when bikers ride on big raods...always scared i will nail one and be screwed for the rest of my life, but thats just me, lol

When I lived in England, it was really hard for me, at first, to get used to the cyclists. They used the roads the same as cars did, and had the same right of way, rules and regs and stuff. Coming from a place where cyclists were treated the same as pedestrians, it was took a while to get used to treating them as vehicles.

do you hae to end every sentence with lol? lol

I bike on the road even when there isn't a bike lane, but if I notice cars behind me, and there is an opportunity, i slow down and pull over for a bit to let them safely pass.

On the road with the other vehicles. I would also think proper procedure would be to call out which side you are passing on should the need arise towards other bikers or pedestrians, similiar to skiing downhill etiquette🙂

Just make sure they can see you and pass you. I ride in the road but get away with the privelages of a pedestrian like sneaking into the crosswalk aka running the red light. Where I ride I pass the cars because of all the traffic. I usually ride with traffic. I avoid the sidewalk because its a huge shopping area, so unless theres no ne on the sidewalk just go on the side of the road.

Well it sounds like you live smack in the middle of NYC...

I live in suburbia where all the cars to 45+mph on small roads.

Where I live, the side walk.

I swear no one walks in this town, every one drives and they all suck or are just crazy and will kill you. And there are no shoulders to ride on.

road definitely road.

lane management is somethign you pick up quick. I never ride very close to the curb because 1) that is where there is crap that can flat your tire 2) drivers sometimes pass dangerously close if they think you are hell bent on hugging the curb 3) line of sight of cross traffic is impeded as you move closer to the curb.

hence, I tend to ride about 2 feet from the curb.

Sometimes I will ride further away from the curb. If there are cars parked on the street. If I want to make myself highly visible. If I need to turn left or get out of a turn right only lane. If I want to telegraph my intentions to traffic.

The way I see it, is that the goal of street cycling is 1) keep from getting run over, 2) have fun 3) avoid obstructing traffic

wtf? no! are you an idiot? right side of the road, fool.

Bike with traffic, run/walk against traffic. Always off to the side. Not a hard concept.

I run daily. I run on the side of the road, and if cars are coming, I'll sometimes move over to the dirt on the side. On a bike, I always stay on the far right of the road.

Hahahaha, when I said "car lane" I meant the lane the cars travel on...meaning in the middle of the RIGHT lane, not the middle of the whole damn road! 😛

yep... you also become target practice for soda cans, water bottles, spit, pennies... the usual honk... and if you're really lucky you get all of the above along with a finger. 🙂

Ride safe! 😀

I know what you meant. I didn;t think that you meant in the middle of the road. You dont bike in the middle of the car lane! You stay on the f***in side at the edge of the road so they can pass you.

On smaller roads, the road. But on big roads I'm still not used to riding beside the cars so unless there are pedestrians, I go on the sidewalk.
