Microscopic studies of these tonsilloliths have shown them to contain a combination of food particles, bacteria, oral debris, and white blood cells in a concentrically laminated pattern -- rather like a pearl. Usually they are small gritty particles found in the center of soft, cheesy flecks. Sometimes, however, they become quite large, appearing as rough, yellow or gray, round stones. At times they reach an extraordinary size. Affected people usually have a history of repeated attacks of tonsillitis in earlier years.

hmm..my mouth looks just like yours. there's a little pocket on top of one tonsil that would fit a huge tonsil stone. but luckily...i havent had any yet. just gargled with scope because my mouth felt dirty from reading all this.

Wow, I had no idea what they were before this thread. Sometimes if I have a coughing fit, I notice these thing get caught in my mouth. The first time, my mouth was open, and white stuff appeared on them. I wiped it off with a tissue, and thought nothing of it. A few weeks ago, I had another fit, and this time I had my mouth closed, and felt something in my mouth. I bit down on it, and all of a sudden, the most nastiest tasting/smelling thing ever started to accumulate in my mouth. I had no idea what it was, and it tasted/smelt like some kids breath I know who never brushes his teach and has halitosis. Now I know what the fvck they are.

Well, I coughed one up today for the first time since I quit smoking about 18 months ago. This concerned me and spurred me to investigate a bit. A couple of notes: Unless you've had your tonsils out, you very likely have / have had these. They aren't a result of not practicing good hygeine. The smell is indescribable. It's been gone over, but it really is *that* bad, enough for me to go over again. You can maybe-sometimes see them visually; get in front of a mirror with a flashlight, and 'flex' your tonsils so that they come forward. se7enty7's pic is a good guide as to where to look. Dunno about other people, I have one bigass hole in each tonsil where his arrow points. If one's close to the surface for me it'll be visible, but they can hide in deeper. I tried a few things suggested, most made me gag. Q-tip is the least bad, imo. You can dig in the holes a bit and might get a few small ones. Even if you don't have any stones, I guarantee you that q-tip will come out smelling not-quite-like-roses. I'm really considering having my tonsils removed, I can't freaking stand these.
