So far I would say I am most surprised by how much Chafee lost by. 8% points is a big deal, especially since the late polls had them much closer.

So far every other Senate seat has come down right where we expected it too.

Lincoln Chafee didn't lose the Republican Senator who is Lincoln Chafee lost.

John I think there is a tendency by the public and the media to put too much stock into polls. What's more important is to look at what issues voters believe are most important and to see how the parties are faring in that regard. Clearly Iraq was a huge deal, and in a Blue state issues that swing the Democrats way will only serve to help them. That is why despite poll numbers showing tightening, not much was really made of the Chafee race compared to other races.

Chaffee is RINO for sure. He voted AGAINST the war.

There was a great exchange where he attacked Bill Clinton when he came to push for the Democrat.

Chaffee pointed out that it was HE who voted against the war, while Mrs. Clinton voted FOR the war.

Didn't help Chaffee any, but was interesting.

He could have been a far right winger, he still would have lost today.

The fact that voting against the war invalidated ones' Republicanism is the big reason why Republicans lost tonight. They tried to part from the President but too little too late. Should have started months ago when his approval ratings were in the 30s.

If he had been for the war he would have lost by a far larger margin. He lost because he has the title of republican, not because he is a moderate to liberal republican.

Biggest winner? Hopefully America, which can now at least hope for some resolution to the Iraq issue. Of course that's selfish, the biggest benefactors of resolving the Iraqi issue are the Iraqis themselves.

Biggest loser? W & his Administration, which has had its testicles severed.

The thing that surprised me most was four of Indiana's districts going blue. Several incumbents got beat, including Mike Sodrel, who the Republicans spent a fortune hawking. I'm proud to say my county was the decisive factor in giving him the win. So the Dems picked up two house seats from good ol' conservative Indiana. This is the first time I've been proud of the government in a long time. It make take some time, but eventually the system seems to work.

Chafee would have won if he were pretty much any other political party than Republican.

I'm suprised that the NJ race was declared so early (though not by its eventual outcome)... Governor Corzine must be sleeping like a baby tonight.

You know we've been hearing how Ford was going to get less vote than he polled because he's black. Well, he did better than the poll average. I think we'll see a lot more of him. Hopefully next time he runs, he's married, which will help him.

Honestly surprised at how close the govs race in MN is. You have a republican gov who balanced the budget after Ventura destroyed it without raising taxes. He has sat over some very nice economic data in this state. We consistently rank high for low unemployment. He has pushed funds into areas that are vital to the expansion of the twin cities(roads).

I think what got him was the general backlash against republicans and helping push through the stadium measures. That whole mess hurt him, but I think he will still pull off a close win.

It surprises me because the guy running against him is your classic lawyer Ahole and has literally zero plans to deal with anything. The media didnt help matters as they never pressed Hatch on how he was going to pay for his proposed spending either. Plus the guy is a hothead like Howard Dean. He called a reporter who dared report his campaign in a negative light a republican whore, but he claims later was hack.

But that is what happens when the two big newspapers are owned by the same company.

I would say you are 100% right in this case.

A lot of conservatives will be glad he is gone though.

Not just any Democrat.. THE Democrat that lost his seat when Delay redrew the district lines. Oh the irony.

No they wont. Not when they lose majority. He may have voted against him, but if he kept his seat, the Repubs would be assured control over the Senate still.

Not a surprise, due to the write-in thing the Republican was facing a HUGE challenge. Especially with a name like Sekula Gibbs... could they not find a "smith" some where? :)

What does that troll have to do with this thread?

It's not a troll, how incredulously ignorant are you? Have you not been paying attention, again? Or are you going to retort that the markedly increased levels of media consolidation over the last 6 years have had nothing to do with the Republicans?

Hint: casually dismissing legitimate criticisms leveled at you doesn't fool anyone but yourself.
