I currently use a 24" LCD HDMI for my desktop.
I was thinking of upgrading to a larger monitor.
What larger sizes are realistic and a good bang for the buck?

Can you tell me how that screen handles gaming at 1440p? And also how the quality is for general usage at that resolution.

Might look at the Samsung 27inch Monitor/HDTV. Reviews are kind of mixed. I wish Monitors worked more like TV's with video and sound with one HDMI cable.

My question is: what you do mean by "larger"? Physically larger, higher resolution, or both? Physically larger means just that, everything is bigger. Higher resolution means that there are more pixels, which means more detail but also harder on your GPU when gaming.

If you want physically larger but the same resolution, you can use pretty much any recent 1080p LCD TV as a monitor. Those obviously get really big if you want.

Higher resolution but not a huge amount physically larger would be a 1440p 27" monitor like a Yamakasi.

Really high resolution and a lot bigger physically would be a 4K (3840x2160) screen like the Seiki 39" mentioned earlier.

I don't do any gaming.

I mainly want a cheap value monitor that is significantly larger than my 24" for when I watch movies.
If there are dirt cheap deals, I don;t mind selling my 24" and applying that to an upgrade.

So, I guess I want size, not res.
I think the 24" size is fine for my computing, so I will retain the 1080p res.
27" is not enough of a size increase to justify any spending.
If I go big, I want a large step up.

Basically what you want then is a TV. 32" 1080p TVs can be stupid cheap, even from respectable brands. This LG is $250. It isn't the greatest set in the world, but it is big (relative to a monitor) and cheap.

I heard TV's are no good for PC use.
I also stream movies and play DVD's via my PC, just to be clear.

They can be less than optimal for gaming because they have higher input latency than a normal monitor, but that doesn't matter for general usage and movie watching.

Obviously you should keep your viewing distance in mind. You don't want a 32" (or really much bigger than your 24") if you sit a foot away from the screen.

I sit exactly 3 feet from the screen.
Basically, arm's length.
I can reach out and touch the screen.

Depends how close your eyes are to the TV & depends on the TV. Also depends on who you ask.

So just try and decide for yourself. ;) You may be very happy.

The bigger the screen the further you should sit from it though.

I use a 42" 1080 TV, because I can sit 2m from it and it doesn't strain my eyes so much as sitting close.
