the MW3 hate thread got me thinking bout games that i was disappointed with. so i figured i'd make a thread asking what people's most disappointing games of all time were. i can think of a few off the top of my head.
1. Mario Kart 64
after the masterpiece that was the SNES version, this game was such a pile of shit. the fastest cc class in that game felt like 50cc class in the SNES version. they removed the whole jumping/sliding mechanic and replaced it with this stupid ass sliding mechanic that took about 30 seconds to master. the game had absolutely no sense of speed and it took about 2 hours to master the entire game, whereas the skill and precision needed in the SNES version was nowhere to be found. it seems this series has continued to take the same route by dummying down so much in it and making it extremely casual friendly.
2. Super Mario Sunshine
after what is agruably the best game of time, Mario 64, to be so excited for the sequel, and get something as shitty as Mario Sunshine ... wow, what a downer. it barely had anything in it that made Mario 64 so awesome, and went a totally whacky direction with having the water jet attached to mario. this game just had no charm and had some really frustrating controls and parts in general.
3. Gears of War 2
after anticipation from the first game, the bug ridden experience that was Gears 2 was just awful. the single player and multiplayer were just so filled of bugs that i stopped playing this game very quickly. the only saving grace to this game was bringing on horde mode, which now seems to be a standard in multiplayer shooters.
4. MGS4
well i can't say i was too disappointed with this, because i didn't expect much after part 2 (never played part 3, but hear it's great), but even then it was just terribly disappointing. after all the hype built up on that game, it was just a slow boring monotonous game that suffered from clunky and awkward controls. i never got around to finishing it, stopped at act 4. just didn't find it fun and it was more of a chore to play than anything, and the pace of the game was just awful w/all the long cutscenes in between.
Must have been very ronery in your youth to not like Mario kart 64.
MGS4 was not my cup of tea but I know of others who played it again multiple times especially in the harder difficulties.
Sunshine was different but definitely not a candidate for most disappointing.
Gears 2 that is a maybe if you only played the multiplayer. Still better than other games.
For example as reiterated by others:
Duke Nukem Forever - I swear it was like they just saw what was done in the game and slapped a label on it and called it gold. If they had looked closely at flow, presentation, and just basically the game itself it might have been salvaged and maybe done well.
Fable 3 - Do I need to explain this one?
Perfect Dark Zero - Expectations were too high but there were game mechanics that really didn't help this game.
Age of Conan - like other mmo games they were paraded out as a WoW killer and like so many they were crushed by the warhammer that is Blizzard. It is somewhat fun but no one stuck around for very long. Grinding from level 40-52 in a cave because there were no quests? Really!?
Dragon Age 2 - This is a mixed bag. The direction that they took was interesting and by itself if it was presented before Dragon Age 1 it might have been received well. The problem was that they tried to make it accessible console gamers (action button spammers). The concept of giving a command to a character to attack vs. pressing a button causing a sword to swing was probably something that Bioware heard from people not into/new to the genre (complaints at least) - this would have been a hurdle along with the concepts of commanding a group and pausing action to give other commands. If you play Dragon Age 2 you will notice that you can basically play as one character, not pause the action, and simply button smash your way through all if not 99% of them.
I myself at least got wiped out multiple times and by simply changing strategies was able to overcome fights in dragon age 1. This along with the large countryside and decisions that "did" have an effect on characters made Dragon Age 1 in my view great and it is what dragon age 2 missed. If 3 is made I won't be picking it up until it is in the $10 bargain bin because I am dead certain that the game mechanics will stay 95% close to what Dragon Age 2 is.
