i want to buy a new mobo and chip, any advice on what i should get?

I was thinking...

athlon XP 1600, and i have no idea what mobo to get. I want cheap, but i also want quality, so i guess a happy med. would do

any advice?

(looking to spend around or less then $250 on the mobo and chip combo)
 
I picked up an AthlonXP 1600+ and Epox 8KHA+, which is a great board, extremly stable and fast, was also priced well, $199 Canadian (great price for motherboards in Canada)

I still think the Shuttle AK 31 ver 3.1 represents a good value for a "near bleeding edge" system. For around $90 delivered, you get the KT-266a chipset, 4 DIMM slots for DDR ram and the capability to run any of AMD's processors. I helped a friend assemble one, and it worked great out of the box with an Athlon 950, Crucial PC 2100 DDR, and an Enlight 7237 case with 300 W PS. That is what I would consider, if it were me. I have heard good things about the Epox 8KHa as well.

You could get the K7S5A, an XP 1600 and 256 megs of DDR all for under $250 shipped...a true bargain in my book...
 
If you want something right now, the Epox or Shuttle are a good choice. If you want to wait a bit, the new SiS chip looks good. I have had good luck with Newegg.
