Female bombers strike markets in Baghdad

Remote-controlled explosives strapped to two mentally retarded women detonated in a coordinated attack on Baghdad pet bazaars Friday, police and Iraqi officials said, killing at least 73 people in the deadliest day since the U.S. sent 30,000 extra troops to the capital this spring.

The chief Iraqi military spokesman in Baghdad, Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, claimed the female bombers had Down syndrome and that the explosives were detonated by remote control, indicating they may not having been willing attackers in what could be a new method by suspected Sunni insurgents to subvert stepped up security measures.

U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker said the bombings showed that a resilient al-Qaida has "found a different, deadly way" to try to destabilize Iraq.

"There is nothing they won't do if they think it will work in creating carnage and the political fallout that comes from that," he told The Associated Press in an interview at the State Department.

The first attack Friday occurred at about 10:20 a.m. in the central al-Ghazl market. The weekly bazaar has been bombed several times since the war started but recently had re-emerged as a popular place to shop and stroll as Baghdad security improved and a Friday ban on driving was lifted.

Four police and hospital officials said at least 46 people were killed and more than 100 wounded. Firefighters scooped up debris scattered among pools of blood, clothing and pigeon carcasses.

About 20 minutes later, a second female suicide bomber struck a bird market in a predominantly Shiite area in southeastern Baghdad. That blast killed as many as 27 people and wounded 67, according to police and hospital officials.

The attacks were the latest in a series of violent incidents that have been chipping away at Iraqi confidence in the permanence of recent security gains.

Wow. Using mentally retarded women as cannon fodder.

Question, is their any real evidence that this is an Al-Quida attack vs. a non Al-Quida inspired terrorist act? Last time I checked, no one has yet filed for a patent on the 6000 year old idea of terrorism.

But either way, I agree, totally a barbaric thing to do.

No, they're completely capable of understanding their actions and are damn proud of it. They're monsters, not retarded.

no....strong in thier convictions, blinded by religious hate, brainwashed and stupid yes...but not mentally retarded as in a substandard IQ.

As the bar gets lower and lower it is just a matter of time until they start doing the same thing with children.

US soldiers entered a village in VN. Things were very quiet, too much so. Not many minutes passed before a child not much older than a toddler came laughing towards them. There just seconds to act because it was obviously wired with explosives. One soldier shot the child in the head. There was no choice really if his comrades were to live. No time to do anything else. Three months later that soldier "wandered" into the line of fire and died.

Welcome to 40 years ago.

Go back 65 years ago and look at the Japanese. They had every able bodied woman and child with sharpened bamboo sticks ready to "repulse" the foreign devils from Japan. Thankfully that didn't happen.

When we were invading the islands, parents would throw their children from the cliffs, then jump off themselves.

Officers would eat the livers of POW's.

More were killed by samurai swords and firebombing than nukes.

I'm sure it gets worse the farther back in history you go...

heh, was watching the Bourne ultimatum, and I think we really need some highly trained and skilled assassins to deal with people like AQ without the stupid court process and red tape. Just gather info on the leadership in AQ and pick them off one by one. They deserve no due process or compassion with crap like this.

Just to be clear, that death toll is about 98% firebombing and 2% samurai swords.

Yes, that's right, you're not as witty as you thought you were...

As for the OP, and most responders here, if you're just now figuring out how absolutely sick and twisted our enemies are, then you're actually much slower than the CIC you love to bash so often -- after all, even Bush figured that much out on day one!

No, most Chinese killed were either bayonetted or shot. The average Japanese soldier wasn't carrying around a samurai sword with him.

Japanese officers had publicized competitions on how many Chinese they could behead. I remember one where each officer was in the high 100's over about a weeks period. I'll see if I can find it although I read it in a book.

edit: here's something on it:

http://www.militaryphotos.net/...howthread.php?t=123600

From wiki on Nanking massacre: "Decapitation was a popular method of killing, while more drastic practices included burning, nailing to trees, live burial, and hanging by the tongue"

Japanese officers were extremely active in carrying out executions. So while I would say that beheading wasn't the highest method of killing, it would make sense that at least several hundred thousand of the many millions killed were via a Samurai sword.

Just remember, we?re told they do this out of poverty and/or cultural differences. We?re told that we?re no better than this, so we can?t condemn them for it. Apparently Christians also send suicide bombers to markets, I?d just like to know when our liberals belittle western civilization as equal to this barbarism, where are their examples to cite that we commit such horrors?

Blowing up the innocent at the marketplace is routine in the Muslim world. Yet how are we ever going to confront this ? if we do not SO MUCH as call it by name? How are we ever going to prevent the cancer from spreading here to our homeland as we invite its host in with open arms?

Pretty smart move. Not only for using women, but using 'special needs' people.

All this 'on-the-ground' training we're providing al-Qaeda in Iraq is invaluable.

Saddam did a pretty good job keeping suicide bomber rates in his country non-existent, and keeping Iraq's issues contained within its borders.

You think he would accept the job?
