Biggest 1st Round Bust Of The Past Two Decades - NFL Draft

If I've left anyone out, feel free to let me know. Lets discuss.. biggest busts of the past couple of decades. These are a few; had to look up the years but the names were definately in my memory.

For now, I'd say Ryan Leaf. However, that will change in a few years after Grossman has shown his stuff.

Dude, putting Vick on this list is ridiculous. Look at his winning percentage.

🙂 I figured he would get a few votes. I know it was probably a little on the crazy side.

What year was this Tony Mandarich from?

Vick has gone to the pro bowl three times in the past four years. The only year he missed he was out almost all season. How could that even be remotely construed as a bust?

And Mandarich was 1989. Pick two after Aikman. Same draft as Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Derrick Thomas, Steve Atwater etc..

You can't blame Harrington for his lack of success. I am a Lions fan and I always liked Harrington. He never had a running game or an offensive line.

Vick doesn't belong on the list...he single-handidly turned the Atlanta Hokies around 😉

What about Eli Manning (2005) and his team's blowing a 21 point, 4th Q lead?

Leaf might be the biggest bust in the history of the NFL.

Last year Id be tempted to put Alex Smith up there, but he's not so bad this year.

From Wiki:
Entering the 1998 draft, Manning and Leaf were widely considered to be the two best players overall in the draft.[5] The San Diego Chargers had the third pick of the draft, but entered into a trade with the Arizona Cardinals to guarantee they would get one of the two quarterbacks. To move up one spot, the Chargers traded two first round picks, a second round pick and four time Pro Bowler Eric Metcalf.[7]

Considering what was given up to get him, Leaf is by far the biggest bust on the list.

The only reason I would argue Mandarich was a bigger bust than Leaf would be based on the players that were selected in the first round after him.

Barry Sanders
Deion Sanders
Derrick Thomas
Steve Atwater

That's three sure-fire hall of famers and one potential hall of famer. Look at the 1998 1st round. Keith Brooking, Vonnie Holliday, Charles Woodson.. Not quite in the same class.

Seems that Heath Shuler (Redskins) would deserve to be on that list, although I'm leaning toward Mandarich.

Well he would have to add Mandarich to the list so we can vote. 🙂

True but as I pointed out, the Chargers gave up alot just to move up one spot to get Leaf. Additionally, Mandarich did have a comeback of sorts for a couple of years with the Colts where he was serviceable. Leaf was just a cancer from the day he stepped onto the Pro field and crashed spectacularly both on and off the field.
