EDIT: Replaced

Some peoples skepticism, over how the new ownership would make money from this website, maybe had a bit of merit to them.

Heh. I liked what you wrote before.

If they were smart/superevil, they could detect your monitor settings, make the ad just big enough that it makes the screen awkwardly too long, and put the ad about buying a larger monitor or higher-res AOI / laptop. Maybe that's what they're trying to do but mixed up their ads: the SSD one should be the ad that runs really slooooow so you'll think you need a new hard drive after seeing it. :sneaky:

... I'm probably giving them too many ideas.

Sorry, I've put it back up, here:

Some other forums (e.g. Toms), when you don't have adverts blocked, annoy me like crazy, with all the adverts and screen grabbing nonsense etc.

I very much hope that this site (AnandTech forums), does not end up the same way.

Before I regularly had adverts blocked (mainly because of other websites which were annoying/distracting), this website was very gentle with its advert (s missed out on purpose).

I hope this is NOT the start of a new trend, here.

I am also annoyed by the large add that is taking up a large portion of the screen. It really sucks on my small phone screen.

Holy crap make it stop. Looks terrible. Generally don't run adblock because I like to support sites I visit frequently when that is how they survive but my rethink that decision.

Same here! I hope it gets fixed, or mods can delete my account here. Looking for alternatives already, this one still looks ok (and uses vBulletin as well):

Hey there guys!

Sorry to hear about an ad causing you trouble. Our guys have been alerted to the issue and will be rectifying the situation. This type of thing happens every so often on all sites with a mixup in the network or some such serving an ad that shouldn't be served at a certain point in time.

To the OP, could you show a screenshot of what the ad looks like, or the text it contains to help us narrow down the culprit?

Some peoples skepticism, over how the new ownership would make money from this website, maybe had a bit of merit to them.

Nope. You'll note the lack of an adsplosion here on the forums. Your voice has been heard loud and clear, and we aren't rolling out anything to increase the ad footprint as far as I know. As for:

Some other forums (e.g. Toms), when you don't have adverts blocked, annoy me like crazy, with all the adverts and screen grabbing nonsense etc.

Ads on the forums on Tom's aren't shown to members at all. It's a little perk, but might not be readily noticeable as a random visitor. Don't know if that's something we can easily do here as well, but can look into it. :)

I did not realize that Tom's stopped the adverts for (presumably logged in) members. On finding/seeing other forums where there is an explosion of annoying/flashing/full-screen adverts, I just quickly read what I was searching for. Then close it, never going there again (until google picks something from there again).

Also, sorry if I have misunderstood/over-reacted, to a mix up with one of the adverts.

EDIT:
I think the offending ad, looked like this:

No worries! And thanks for the screenie. I've forwarded it along to the ad peeps - hopefully they can get it resolved. That ad shouldn't be displayed to anyone in the forums.

Thank you JP! I am happy to hear that it is just a bug. :)

Well I found out how to block that particular ad in Firefox. Just right click on it, select "View Image Info", then check the box that says "Block images from ..." and refresh. It seems to be working so far without having to resort to an extension/addon (maybe this was already common knowledge though).

edit: Ahh, that's only partially true. It's still there if you turn on Flash.

Hopefully it will be gone for good, soon, as per this quote:

Glad I'm not the only one seeing this. I have a 1080p monitor, but it's cutting the forum just about in half with the size of the ad! Pushes the left nav bar all the way over :(

I'm also getting 728x90 ads which really screws up the size of the forum. Please have the team check their defaults and please limit them to 160x600 or at worst 300x250. I understand they probably get a better CPM on the 300x250s.

Follow-up: Looks like it might be fixed just now...

The other issue I'm getting is the size of the top ads. It's literally taking up the upper half of my screen. Half of my monitor is an advertisement :D

I just had an ad from cdn.w55c.net automatically download as an HTML document in Chrome while scrolling through a thread  I've had 5 specific issues:

1. Jumbo top ads (takes up literally 50% of my screen)
2. Left ads pop out of size & push the forum over off-screen
3. Affiliate links added by AT extend the width of my posts off-screen sometimes
4. Affiliate links have literally change the website I linked to (ex. a Newegg product is rewritten to a Walmart product)
5. Just had a download issue with an ad where it didn't even do a popup or anything, just downloaded straight to HTML

Ads are kinda borked, growing pains?
