Senator Arlen Spector says he might have enough votes to override a veto by that idiot GW Bush. This bill would expand federal funing for embryonic stem cell research on fertilized eggs leftover from invitro fertilization. Remember folks these are frozen fertilized eggs that will eventually expire or be destroyed.

Since they are not being used why not make them available for research? Bush is such a moron.

Certain types of medical research that would benafit mankind government should fund. Thats why money is used for things like cancer research. I'm sure there are things money should not be spent on like the mating habits of caribou or the Iraq war.

If it will cause treatments regarding stem cell research to be cheaper then I'm all for it. I think in this case private reasearch for the sole purpose of making huge profits is not a good idea.

-It should be, because this is the only way money will get into science that will show promise many years off rather than science that shows promise next year

-No, but improving medicine certainly has helped you stay healthy to whatever age you are today. I think that is an admirable goal that deserves government funds.

The phrase 'general welfare' is from the Preamble of the Constitution and is irrelevant, legally-speaking. Now if you think the original founders meant it to have any legal force, why would they have bothered writing the rest of the document? If you think the phrase 'general welfare' grants any specific powers to Congress, cite a single Supreme Court case supporting that idea.

Use your brain for a second. If the research leads to medical advancements that ultimately cure people from diseases that eat up a large chunk of government programs like Medicare and Medicaid, don't you think the small initial investment in research will pay itself off quickly and actually lower everyone?s tax burden? Or do you only believe in expanded government when it comes to starting war or funding religious groups? I love it when so called conservatives on this board complain about more government funding when their King appointed by God has managed to create a deficit large enough to have our grandkids paying it off.

Nah, it's better for the Government to not encourage innovation in science and technology; that way we can slowly (or quickly) fall behind other countries, thus losing the benefits of being at the pinacle of innovation, through newer jobs, increased exports/reduced imports, etc..etc...

Its better to fall behind. That's the Bush way. Oh, and an energy policy that gives billions back to oil companies who made billions in profit in the first quarter. Much better to give them money then to encourage next-gen research.

Your appeal to emotion is no better than the GOP's appeal to morals or life. This isn't about feelings - it's about what the gov't is and isn't charged with doing - per the Constitution. That isn't necessarily a Right-wing ideal - it's more of a Libertarian stance(although the Right used to carry that flag too - and I'm working on getting our hand back on that😀)
