I actually like the Ford Focus, but the Passat is crap in terms of reliability and dealer service.

Yay! Another mindless chucklehead bashing VW. The Jettas/Golfs/Beetles are the trouble children. The Passat, that is actually still made in Germany and not Mexico like the others, is actually ranked pretty well as far as reliability from Consumer Reports themselves.

I know four other Passat owners on this forum along with my self and we all couldn't be happier with our cars. One of us had the infamous coilpack problem (not me), and besides that we've all been problem free.

Do your research and just don't make blanket statments.

Vi, would you say TDIs are prone to the same problems as the 2.0, 18.t and VR6? I usually hear VW problems are mostly electrical so the engine doesn't have much to do with the problems, but I've also heard the TDI isn't so bad.

Thats not reliability, thats the ovearall "top picks".
I just got that issue yesterday... those are just the cars with the best overall scores in each category. Civic was like 1 point behind Focus, and it had better reliability than the Ford.

Engine wise, the TDI's are immune to the coilpack issues. A diesel is also in general, a longer lasting engine than a gas equivalent. Outside of that though, the smaller line of VW vehicles are much more prone to reliability problems - windows falling into doors, power locks having problems, little electrical things here and there, ect.

The Passat is just a much, much better built car than the others. Even with the coilpack problems and the fact that it's going on a 7th or so model year, it still places very well in reviews and comparisons.

I don't see why that's news. My family has been driving mostly Fords for as long as I can remember, and every single car had over 200k miles when we retired them, and rarely gave us problems. My dad had to Rangers, both with over 300k, my mom had an LTD wagon and a Sable wagon both with 225K. we have never had any reliability problems at all.

I'm sorry but I don't buy this. They're trying to tell me that Ford, GM are more reliable than BMW, Mercedes, Audi? Ok, I might be living in the past when I say - No way Jose.
