No details yet, other than speculation that it started on a barge, and that it started at about 10:10 EST.

Yes, 10:10 is when I woke up. Damn house shook and my car alarm went off...

Apparently a barge containing crude oil burst into flames which is now endangering the Hess oil refinery, the refinery contains approximately 6 million barrels of oil.

No, its the Mobil refinery, which is on Staten Island. The part where the refinery is is so close to NJ, you can't tell...

Probably freaked out half of New York City.

Freaked out will come at the gas pump.

We have at least 2 refinery fires in Illinois every year. Had one 2 days ago up north. Gas went up 7.5 cents before the fire was even reported on the news.

It was indicated the increase was needed to cover "possible" shortages.

I can just imagine the screwing you will take if a whole refinery goes up.

about 25 minutes ago I looked out my window (about 20 miles away) and I saw a giant black cloud. I turned on the TV and the radio and it was about 10 minutes before I saw any coverage.

The cloud is HUGE!!!!! and floating towards Long Island...thankfully not in my direction. An UNBELIEVABLE site, not unlike the smoke from 9/11.

YIKES!:Q

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A propane barge exploded off New York's Staten Island on Friday, fire officials said. The explosion in the waterway known as Arthur Kill between Staten Island and New Jersey sent plumes of black smoke and flames into the sky.

listening to the NYC poilce radio frequency...they're telling the cops to go no closer than 3/4mile away from the scene. and, there is a fire in the underground pipes going inland.
