Ok, heres the stuation:
I built a computer for my grandpa...... and it worked fine for a week. So I told him I would give it to him today. Now theres these little red lines over the icons and cursor and the sound sounds like crap, al staticy. It's not the moniter or 3D card. Heres the specs:
Duron 750
ECS K7S5A
Windows XP
Creative Modem Blaster
Onboard sound
ATI Xpert2000 pro 32MB

Anyone have anyideas?

(BTW< I put this in off topic because I'm not sure if its a hardware or software issue, and I need answers asap)

Last app I instaled was teh Modem drivers, and they worked fine for 5 days.

and I have reintalled the audio and modem drivers, to no avail.

Its cooling off as we speak

Bump... comeon guys, I need help. Its not heat, and I just reinstalled Windows, no luck. I'm going to try to format next, unless someone has a beter idea

1. it might be on-board. usually on-board = crap.

i was going to suggest reinstall drivers but i see you did this already.

but you started building the comp from format right? ummm, if nothing has worked so far, start from the beginning and track your every installation and see if it does happen again.

good luck
danny~!

Use the TweakUI Restore Icon option for the video problems. That should work. Do a google search for TweakUI. I don't have a link right off hand.

What do you mean when you say the sound is "crappy"? Does it happen all the time? Try playing a wav file and also a midi. Do both sound poor? An IRQ conflict can cause garbled sound. Have you tried checking that? Try plugging the SB card into a different PCI slot. Try plugging the speakers into another machine to see if they are the problem.

Its not the video card at all, I swaped my GF3 in and it still did it. And I'm 90% through a format now, I'm going to see where/if it happens again. And the sound is completly unintelligable..... nearly entirly LOUD static. And its not a SB card, its onboard

Interference? That might affect video and sound at the same time, I guess. Or else a funky conflict, but if it's happening in the Windows install I kind of doubt that. Don't know dude. Bump I guess.

I dont think its interference..... the stuff is only around the icons and the cursor.

*bump*

SOmeoen has to have a fix for this

checked cables. My house sits over 1000 feet from a road, AFAIK, 5+ miles to the nearst high-voltage lines.

Do you mean just take the stuff out and reseat it, with the compter off?

And I checked my cables.

I think tommarow after school im going to start merging my computer and his, and find out exactly wtf the problem is.

Change your monitor. There's a chance you might have two wires in the monitor cable touching each other within the connectors....could also be a bent pin. If you swap the monitor and still have the problem, I'd change your power source and plug it in another location. Your power outlets might not be properly grounded even if it has a 3rd prong on the wall....some electricians don't always wire that stuff up correctly... 😉

Its not the moniter. I tried 2 different moniters

Its not the power. My computer was pluged into teh same plug for over a year, worked fine
