BIG PROBLEM WITH MY ISP!

This is in GH as well, but I don't care cause I'm PISSED OFF!

Sorry about the caps but this has made me more angry then anything before...

While I was at university today, I found out that some guy from my ISP (works for Shaw, which is no longer running with @Home).

Anyway, they put on a new cable modem. When I heard this, I figured that as usual, they disabled the router sharing I had going between the 2 computers in the house.

They not only messed the whole computer up (they somehow made it so one network card doesnt work. They must have used some script or something. Nothing shy of a format will fix this I'm certain)...

... This part has me in total shock...

They DELETED my C:\Windows\Cabs folder!! I know they did this to prevent me from re-installing ICS on the system! (which they also uninstalled first)

Then to cover up deleting it, they edited the registry to make it look like the folder was never there!

How do I know? This is how: (From my registry)

[HKLM]\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

CommandLine - /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=Y:\WIN98 /IZ /IS /IQ /IT /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This is the directory where I first Installed from (Y:\WIN98) Notice the CAPS lock on the Folder name.

Then, after I coppied the Win98 Cab files to C:\Windows\Cabs, I modified the SourcePath value to:

C:\WINDOWS\CABS

Again, I used all caps. I do this all the time. Why? I dunno, just to make it look normal? (call me a freak 🙂)

Anyway, when I checked the registry when I got home this is what I see:

SourcePath - d:\WIN98

THEY DELETED MY CAB FILES AND EDITED MY REGISTRY!!!!

There is no fscking way that can be legal!! This pisses me off so fscking much!!

I wanna sue the bastards for invasion of privacy or something. Do I have any kind of case? There's no way they can be legally allowed to delete my files!!

<< Did you sign the waiver for them to work on your computer? It sounds like gross negligence. >>

I wasn't at home when it happened, but my parents were. I don't think they signed anything though (they would have told me if they did)

Can you prove that they did it, and not some script kiddy who hacked into your machine?

You can't.

So stop wasting your time and money.

Whats more likely here:

a) Some script kiddie decides to hack into my computer (which is using ZoneAlarm), to delete my C:\Windows\Cabs folder, then edit the registry to make it look like he didn't do it. This also coincidently happenes on the same day as some brain dead technician installs a new modem and screws up my ICS.

b) The technician to installed my new modem, disabled ICS, then deleted the files to re-enable ICS, then modified the registry to hide his tracks.

Well, I'd say case B is much more likely.

As for finding proof... Windows keeps a few backups (from earlier dates) of the registry, correct?

Well, is there anyway to scan the backup registry, or import it somehow? If so, then I can prove that the registry was modified. As for finding the deleted files, I haven't done much writing to the disk, so if I can track down a copy of Norton Undelete (whatever its called), I can prove that the folder was deleted.

I can't let them get away with this.

Call your states DPUC (Department of Public Utility Control).
In Connecticut...DPUC.

File a complaint with them.
These people are like Nazis when it comes to consumer protection 🙂
