Is there a difference between a kia and a Corvette ?

YES, it will blow the doors off your 500 (unless you don;t upgrade your HD and video card, then it won;t be as noticable)

nope. no difference at all. p3 500 and p4 2.8C are the same. just like kia's and corvettes both have 4 wheels. j/k. Of course there's a difference! :p

but Markfw900 is right... make sure you get a new faster hard drive too or your P4 2.8C will be slow. and if you're into gaming, then get a new vid card too.

Yeah, getting all new parts. Not using anything but my wifi card from the last computer. Just curious if I will actually see a nice performance boost in general applications.

It depends what you run. If all you do is email, nope. Otherwise, huge.

You will see a difference. A HUGE difference. I guess the question that comes to mind, what OS are you currently using, and do you plan to upgrade it (that is if there is room for upgrade)?

Hey guys. I was thinking about upgrading from a 2GB hard drive to a 320GB. Will it hold more data or is there really no big difference?

In a few months im going to be doing the same jump. My poor little P3 500mhz with 8mb ATi Rage video card has gone through to much abuse, i have to put them down soon. Hello P4 2.8 w/ ATi 9800pro :)

Worth it? Depends what you do. I have a machine at work that's just fine PII450 for telnet, pine, word, 98se, ftp, acrobat and many other low overhead programs. When you start 3d gaming, modeling, photoediting, ripping it will be night and day difference. if all you use it for is to brose the web buy some intel stock instead of thier chip...it's down right now.

That is scary. How do you euthanize a computer? Shoot it between the Windows Keys? :p

I'd install linux on it. It'll never be useful again.

"crucial 512 pc3200 ram"
Is it 2X256MB or only one stick???
If it's only one stick, then go to get another one.

you will not "notice" any difference in web surfing, email applications, simple word processing.
computer will load programs like photoshop, and the operating system faster.
video intensive programs will run demostrably faster
games will run faster

generally a 5X increase in processor speed is easy noticable.
a 10X increase in processor speed is necessary for the "wow" factor to kick in.
having gone from an original ibm pc at 4mhz over time to a 2.8 ghz p4, this has been my impression. generally worth upgrading when processor speed increases by 5 fold, at that point you should get a whole new system..other systems will slow you down.

Any computer is only as useful as the person using it.

I suggest you get a 9700pro/9800np or pro over the 9600. The difference is around $30-40 dollars but worth it, IMO.
