Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist was among those who for procedural reasons cast a "no" vote, so that he could bring the drilling issue up for another vote.

Good for him. Stevens needs to be run out of town, WTF is wrong with Alaskan voters? They need to change the procedures, no tacking on crap to bill that don't belong. The whole process is a joke.

Ol' Pork Chop Stevens is the sorriest excuse for a Senator Alaska has ever had.
Wake up our Northern brothers. This guy is an embarassment.

If ANWR opens up, each Alaskan citizen will recieve a larger check for the oil pumped.
Why would Alaskans think he is an embarassment?

Free money? Well hell, do whatever it takes then. Color me surprised...

Maybe we can get some extra cash if we sell states to other countries, we already sell our debt to China. Maybe we can get a few billion for Texas if we sell to Mexico. Or maybe Russia wants Alaska back?

The Republican talking point for judicial appointments is "they deserve a straight up or down vote."

For ANWR drilling they are too hypocritical to allow a vote for it by itself, in its own bill, on its own merits.

Kudos to the Republicans who had the integrity to cross party lines and vote no.

Stevens (and I've watched some interviews with him) is about as close to being an evil nutcase as a senator can get.

All politicians throw in some pork, but Stevens is the biggest pig farmer in the Senate.

Aw....the poor oil companies. Guess they'll have to live off of their price gouging and their federal subsidies from a recently-passed bill.

But, good to know that DICK cast the tiebreaking vote to tell the sick, the old, and the young to "go fvck themselves" in cutting Medicare and education funding and authorizing hospitals to turn away people who are uninsured. Guess we should move to Iraq since it's like Heaven over there according to this administration and its supporters (and, after all, there's free healthcare and education over there, partly courtesy of the US taxpayer!)

You have to give the guy credit though. Coming from probably the position of least power he seems to have figured it out.

By the way, this is the way it works. He is technically doing a wonderful job for his constituents. Unfortunately, the rest of Congress is letting him take their share. As long as they let it happen, you can only shake your head and ask why.

Alaskans don't need a bigger check from the oil revenue. Heck, in 20-30 years their property values will soar as Alaska becomes the new Southern California due to global warming.
Prince William Sound will be the new Malibu.

Oh you mean a representative is doing something that benefits his own constituents?

Now isnt that a novel idea!

Hmmm...$250 million that benefit about, what, 50 constituents? Quite the cost per head, eh?

Buy them all 30-footers and be done with it. It'd be much cheaper.

Natives also get money from Lumber. You want to know why it's a bad idea go take a look at the Aleutian Chain.

I have a novel idea, how about not giving them money? Why do we pay citizens to rape our country? They don't own the state, hell most of them were not born there.

How are you paying citizens to "rape" our country?
And this doesnt really answer my question but instead tries to deflect it.
From my vantage point their senator is doing a fine job for them, which contradicts your theory.

I'm looking for my "theory" above, didn't find it. I was saying this guy is a low life politician. Every time I see his name he is doing some despicable thing. I had no idea ANWR drilling meant more money for people in Alaska, that in itself is disgusting.

Trying to tack ANWR on to an unrelated bill, bad politics.
Refusing to put the Oil executive under oath despite the call from other committee members calls, bad politics.
Throwing a fit and threatening to quit if he loses his bridge to no where, bad politics.

He is the poster child for a slime ball politician's. That's not a theory, that's my opinion.

So you make a decision based on not knowing all of the information? And you complain about Bush's decision making?

Tacking ANWR onto an unrelated bill is bad but your idea this guy is despicable and an embarassment for his people is wrong.

The guy is fighting for the people of his state, that is why he was elected duh.

An abominable attempt by some Senate Republicans to put support for our troops in jeopardy by dangerously adding an amendment allowing drilling in the anwar was defeated today by patriotic Senators.
Whew. Despicable attempt to try and hold our troops hostage barely defeated!!
Alright... First off nobody held anything hostage. If anyone was holding defense money hostage it was the dems for filibustering the whole thing. So get off that horse. Good grief. All they had to do was vote yes. The hang up was on the Dems side. With an up or down vote this would have passed no problem.

Alaskan voters wouldn't vote for a guy who wouldn't fight to open ANWR. ANWR is the #1 issue in this state. Over 80% of the state wants it open for drilling. Hell... ANWR is how Lisa Murkowski got re-elected over former governor Tony Knowles. Knowles was leading the race till Lisa pointed out that if he was elected the makup of the senate might switch to Dem control... thus nixing ANWR for good. The next day Lisa jumped ahead in the polls and stayed there.

It's not that. Most people outside of Alaska have no clue what that check is about. A few hundred dollars extra every year to the citizenry is not the reason we want that land drilled. It's about jobs, our economy and our security. It is about the future of our state.

If you really feel that way then why not just turn us loose? Russia is broke, they can't buy anything back.

Yikes. Probably the most ludicrous thing said in this thread... Oh wait. Nope. Not as dumb as the thread title. Close though.

Are you trying to say that the Aleutians were once heavily forrested? Are you serious? The Aleutians don't have trees. Never did. Good lord....

LOL Dude, you're right! How many years now have I thought I fished in the Aleutians! I looked at a map I was far more south and more east than I thought. I was more near Sika, Craig, Petersberg not the Aleutians. Thanks for the call out.
