Big News: Intel P4 chipset w/dual-channel DDR

Blatantly ripped from X-Bit Labs:

<< The third product, we would like to mention, seems to be the most interesting of all, especially as it is for the first time that Intel reveals its details. This chipset will have some codename starting with ?S? and is scheduled for H2?02. Its key feature will be the dual-channel PC2100 DDR SDRAM interface. In other words, this solution will be provided with 128bit memory bus featuring 4.3GB/sec bandwidth, just like NVIDIA nForce. Actually, it is all very logical. The newcomer should also support new Pentium 4 CPUs working with 133MHz FSB and 533MHz Quad Pumped bus, which bandwidth will also make 4.3GB/sec. This way, the use of dual-channel DDR SDRAM interface will let Intel develop a well-balanced Pentium 4 chipset with DDR SDRAM support. Intel is also going to implement AGP 8x support there, and due to the new ICH4 South Bridge this product will acquire USB 2.0 and SerialATA support as well. >>

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🙂😉😀😉😀🙂😛😀🙂😛🙂😉😀😉😀🙂😛😀🙂😛

But I thought Intel wanted RDRAM to rule the top end market for the P4? Well, either way, sweetness!

I have to say, right now AMD gets my money for performance and price, but this sounds very good. Northwood + dual-channel DDR, if the price is reasonable, would be a great platform.

Ah....here we go. I've been quietly waiting for this. I think I have found my new target platform.

<< So is P4 + ddr no longer a laughable solution?

I wasnt aware it was ever a laughable solution. P4X266 is the only DDR P4 chipset available and it compares very admirably to the I850.

2nd half of 2002? long way to go, and its only going to get delayed, lots of time between now and then

I wouldn't doubt Intel's ability to execute this time around. Intel has been right on the button with releasing stuff recently (even despite the PIII and i820 recalls of months ago).

But you're right, a lot can happen in 9-12 months or more.

<< As a result, the upcoming Tulloch chipset supporting single- and dual-channel PC1066 RDRAM initially aimed at the same market segment as the newcomers is very likely to get never born >>

DIE RAMBUS! (the company) then cheaper RDRAM FOR ALL 😀

Awesome. 🙂

Still I'm not really that surprised. With the whole world screaming out for DDR RAM it was a logical choice for Intel. Also it means that this time around RAMBUS doesn't have Intel by the short and curlies.

Even though Intel hasn?t yet disclosed its intentions regarding Tulloch, the company?s partners suspect that the launching of this solution in H2?02 is more likely to be cancelled.

Yikes, shot down!

Like I say mchammer187, you get what you deserve in the end. I'm happy Intel has wised up and gone with DDR. However, it is still weird that Intel would sign a five year contract with Rambus just weeks ago. Maybe that contract has a different purpose. Either way, this looks good for the market, and could finally push the Pentium 4 into the mainstream (DDR in general that is, not just the dual channel solution).

As usual, we can't draw any definitive conclusions, except that dual channel DDR sounds sweet on a 533 MHz FSB Pentium 4...and hopefully for a cheap price. 🙂

Wow! Never thought I actually see this happen. Dual-Channell DDR, think they can make 4-layer boards with it? This sounds great and all, but though, I can't just see them throw RDRAM out the window for good. It has too good of a future ahead of it, in both Single-and Dual Channel. I just really can't see them just throw Tulloch out the Window, why they just got married again, Intella and Rambus for another 5 years I read. I don't think that Intel is throwing RDRAM out, but I do thiunk that they have realized that they do have the power to make a DDR chipset that can provide the same bandy as RDRAM (at the moment) with the lower latency that so many apps still love today. So I don't think this is the end of RDRAM, but Intel finally has gotten smart and realizes that Latency, not Bandwidth (even on P4) rules. In the future when fsb's scale that high, that's when RDRAm will truely take it's place, because DDR, it's not gonna get much higher than PC2700 (Maybe, PC3200 (400MHz (800MHz DDR))), so then it would be maxed out at 5.4GB/ps(Maybe 6.4GB/ps if PC3200 comes) and then Intel will keep on rising the fsb, and then it won't be benifiting and that's where RDRAM comes in because by 2003, RDRAM will be up to 9.6GB/ps, and while even Dual-DDR will still be way behind. But I do agree, that next year, the fsb of P4 won't be any faster, and this Dual-DDR solution will baiscally provide the best of both worlds. Low latency, and High Bandy. Plus USB2.0, AGP8x and Serial ATA😛 some icing on the cake!

Damn it! Why wait until H2 '02 when they can put out a DDR solution now??? I want to build now, Intel!!! Don't you want my money???
