I do want readers to note that KOTOR is a Role Playing Game. While I have also stayed up late playing what is likely the best RPG game to date, I am disappointed with the combat portion. In combat you do not control the action directly, rather you "<EM>issue the main actions you want your character and party to take, and they perform them ... as though you were seeing an action sequence from a movie</EM>." This should appeal to planners and strategist, but will bore your average FPS fan. I personally rank KOTOR below Splinter Cell & Halo, but above Morrowind. (Morrowind has the 'live combat', but I spent way too much time selling loot to finish the game.) I suspect a keyboard will make it much easier/faster to control, and therefore might be better.

You obviously have no idea how the combat system works. (It's a d20 system where dice rolls determine the outcomes and damages.) Too say that FPS shooter fans would be bored is inane. On the PC, I play mostly shooters, but I'm not the slightest bit bored with KOTOR's system. Also, how is the player supposed to directly control the entire party against multiple enemies? The ability to pause and rejigger your strategy is invaluable at times. ("Uh-oh...Carth is almost dead. I'd better have my Jedis cast Force Heal instead of whatever they were gonna do.") You can also control on-the-fly, in real-time (or as real as turn-based combat can get.)

Halo is the most overrated game ever! ALL shooters blow goats on consoles for the simple reason that aiming is impossible and the fixed turn speed prevents quick snap shots. Splinter Cell had it's moments, but the artificially trial-and-error gameplay got tedious after time.

Easy Def, mine was not a personal attack nor based on ignorance. Clearly your a fan of the game and I can respect that. I also liked it. The point was that KOTOR is a RPG and therefore will not appeal to everyone at $50. The fact is RPGs don't appeal to most console gamers. Check the sales figures. While KOTOR set a new 4 day sales record of 250k copies it will never top Halo's 3 million (and growing) mark. Some may say Halo is overrated. That's an opinion. The fact is most critics would differ and the world market has certainly spoken with it's wallet. In your own statement you've demonstrated that KOTOR fans are different than Halo fans. And that was my point.

Your assumption that I know nothing of d20 gaming is irrelevant and incorrect. I played ye ole pen and paper D&D before Nintendo was released (in '85). As far as combat goes I would have just preferred something more like SplinterCell or Morrowind. I acknowledge that I wouldn't be able to simultaneously control multiple characters and Boiware couldn't have used the d20 system.

I realize that Halo sold 2 million copies and continuing to sell, but many of us bought it due to the crazy hype out there (just like people bought PS2 for similar reasons). For example how is an Xbox owner going to read a statement like "every Xbox owner should have this game" or "this game alone is worth getting an Xbox for" or "the best console game ever created," and not actually buy the game?

I have it, but I have played it maybe 4-5 times since I got it. I really respect and admire the game for what it is and what it does, but I couldn't really enjoy it. The game has the most impressive AI I have ever seen (maybe some of you hardcore FPS players have seen better), it also has amazing graphics, and does a great job of making you believe that you are actually in the environment you supposed to be in.

I will say that due to the strengths and merits of the game I would expect that at least half of the people that bought it absolutely love it, but I'm sure there's a large number of Halo owners that are too scared for fear of ridicule to say that they didn't enjoy it or maybe even didn't like it.

:p it reached 3 million copies sold in July 2003. I bought it on sale at the end of 2002 ($30 @ best buy), but I didn't really care much for it either. I gave it to my nephew. I like FPS games on the PC, not on consoles.

I bought it and I enjoyed it, but I agree that it was way overhyped. The game was made out to be something revolutionary when in actuality it was just a FPS game done really well on a console.

I personally liked Metroid Prime much better than Halo.

Was in Walmart and saw they had a limited exclusive bundle (paraphrasing their words) of the Xbox with Splinter Cell and Mech Assault. Hot deal if you want to pick up a new console!

edit: doh, saw Stealth posted this in a separate thread earlier today (shrug)

This bundle deal is also on Walmart.com. My only concern with it is that it looks like it comes with the OLD XBOX controller, which was crap. The S one is much MUCH better.

Mechassault isn't anything special, but Splinter Cell definitely makes this bundle worthwhile.

Wow ... I disagree with everything you wrote. I really prefer the old controller. Additionally, I enjoyed Mechassault. It is a rather arcadey mech game, but I thought it was quite special. On the other hand, while Splinter Cell is beautiful, it was not my cup of tea.

The new bundle is on sale pretty much everywhere now: clone wars, tetris worlds, 2 months Live $179. Bleh.

Fry's B&M has Robotech Battlecry CE for $19.99 (poster, game, tshirt, etc). It's not a sale price, so grab one while supplies last.
