Not sure if anyone knows this yet, but Nintendo is offering a bonus demo disc of upcoming GC games if you preorder Mario Kart Double Dash. I'm not sure when the disc will be available, but it's some more incentive to preorder a great game.

I got it. It's got great graphics. Lots of fun as a party game too (almost as fun as Mario party 4 :) ).

mario golf is a great game, unless you are a golf nut and play the realistic golf games, this one has arcade type controls which i prefer, and crazy holes with pipes, etc.

I'm surprised that no one has posted the 20% off CompUSA PC and Console game sale here. This Thread highlights the sale and gives a way to get overnight shipping for a penny.

That means F-Zero GX for $39.99. Ditto Mario Golf and Soul Caliber 2. PN03 for $31.99. And Zelda:WW for $35.99.

This week only.

Nintendo to cut GameCube price
Under $100 play aims at holidays

By Steven L. Kent
Special to the Tribune
Published September 24, 2003

A struggling third in the competitive video game market, Nintendo of America is expected to drop the price of its GameCube console Wednesday to less than $100 in an attempt to spark sales during the crucial holiday season.

It would be the third price cut for the gaming platform, which launched in November 2001 at $199--or $100 less than competing products from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

Nintendo, the innovative game company known for its "Mario" and "Donkey Kong" franchises, has fallen far behind Sony and Microsoft in U.S. video game hardware sales. With annual U.S. revenues exceeding $11 billion in recent years, video game sales now top Hollywood box office receipts.

Having brought GameCube to market a year after Sony released its PlayStation 2 console, Nintendo has made several mistakes. Market demographics favor older players, but Nintendo's cube-shaped console appeals more to kids.

Furthermore, as Sony and Microsoft invest heavily in multiplayer online games, Nintendo has virtually ignored consumer interest in the category.

"I am concerned that Nintendo is like a train," says Andrew McNamara, editor-in-chief of Game Informer Magazine. "To get it to change tracks is not so easy."

Nintendo hopes the sharp price cut will lead to strong fourth-quarter sales and insure GameCube as a viable video-game platform.

But from a historical perspective, third place has not been kind to video game manufacturers.

In the past, companies like NEC, Sega and Atari have pulled out of the market when they could not find enough support to keep up with the leaders. More often than not, these companies have left the market after disappointing holiday sales.

"The fourth quarter is going to be very important for Nintendo and GameCube in terms of their being able to obtain a strong hardware presence in the market," says Michael Gartenberg, research director at Jupiter Research.

"Microsoft pulled ahead when it out-marketed Nintendo in a huge way in the fourth quarter of last year. Microsoft bundled two free titles with Xbox last year."

Nintendo has sold less than 5 million GameCube consoles, which put it more than 1 million units behind Microsoft's Xbox and 14 million units behind Sony's PlayStation 2.

"In their June results, Nintendo announced that they only shipped 80,000 GameCubes globally in the second quarter," said an industry analyst who asked not to be named. "Translation: There are enough GameCubes in the channel."

Though the new price drop, from $149.99 to $99.99, was offered Tuesday on Amazon.com, it likely will become official during a press conference scheduled for Wednesday.

Nintendo executives did not comment on the price cut Tuesday, but a spokeswoman recently acknowledged GameCube's difficult market position.

"Our feeling [is that the problem] relates to the software," said Beth Llewelyn, director of corporate communications, in an interview earlier this summer. "We did not have the flow of software titles that we needed, and that affected our hardware sales."

Meanwhile, Nintendo is also feeling heat as the dominant maker of hand-held games.

Last May, Sony announced PSP, a new hand-held game system to compete against Nintendo's GameBoys. Finnish cell phone giant Nokia also has entered the market with a combination phone and game system.

Nintendo has sold more than 150 million GameBoys since releasing the unit in 1989.

Still, while some in the industry question if Nintendo will continue to make the GameCube much longer, key software providers say they are committed to the console.

"The GameCube install-base is somewhere around 5 million," says Brian Ferrell, president and CEO of THQ, which makes top-selling professional wrestling games. "Say there are a few million units sold this holiday season, that is a viable install-base for a softwaremaker.

"Remember, we will have our big brands on all of the key systems, whether it's Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. What we look at is the aggregate install-base and what is the cost of bringing a game to the platform versus what we can sell on it."

Jeff Brown, the president of corporate communications at Electronic Arts--the world's largest independent game publisher--said his company has "16 to 17 games in development for the GameCube.

"It's like network television," Brown said. "Boy, you would be a dope to get out of the business just because you came in third. It's like asking if ABC should get out of broadcasting. You can come in third and still make a handsome profit."

Here is the official statement from Nintendo regarding the price drop:

New Hardware Price Spearheads Aggressive Holiday Campaign

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 2003--Just in time for
the biggest video game thrills of the fall, Nintendo of America Inc.
today announced a new MSRP of $99.99 for its Nintendo GameCube(TM)
home game console, effective tomorrow, Sept. 25. This great new price
opens an $80 price advantage over its two console competitors.

While the price of Nintendo GameCube hardware is falling, the
variety and affordability of great software is soaring. Coupled with
expansion of the Nintendo GameCube library to more than 320 games by
the end of the year, the new MSRP of $99.99 and added exclusive offers
will further boost momentum for the console throughout the holidays.

Mario Kart(R): Double Dash!!(TM), available Nov. 17 exclusively
for Nintendo GameCube, is the most-anticipated game of the season.
Nintendo has announced that customers who reserve a copy of the game
in advance will receive a free bonus disc, loaded with game footage
and gameplay previews for a wide array of upcoming hits.

In addition, Nintendo recently expanded the Player's Choice
library offering discounted prices for a half dozen award winning
games including Super Mario Sunshine(TM), Animal Crossing(TM) and
Metroid(R) Prime.

"So far in 2003, Nintendo GameCube is the only home console
showing an increase in unit sales compared to 2002," says George
Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate
communications, Nintendo of America. "Every time a generation of
technology has moved into the true mass market, Nintendo has
prospered. This incredible new price and our great software offers are
designed to accelerate that trend like never before."

"This is not only good for Nintendo, but great for consumers,"
says Lucky Evani, Toys 'R Us representative. "For $99, you can now buy
video game technology that you couldn't have purchased for $99,000
just a few years ago."

The hot holiday titles from Nintendo will include Mario Kart:
Double Dash!! (Nov. 17), Kirby(TM) Air Ride (Oct. 13), Mario Party(R)
5 (Nov. 11), 1080(TM) Avalanche (Dec. 1), and Pokemon
Channel(TM) (Dec.1), as well as the highly anticipated Final
Fantasy(R): Crystal Chronicles(TM) and Pokemon Colosseum(TM) in the
first quarter of 2004. In addition, the Nintendo GameCube fall lineup
is replete with top quality interactive thrills provided by
independent publishers that appeal to every game taste, ranging from
sports to action to role-playing titles.

The worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive
entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and
markets hardware and software for its popular home and portable video
game systems. Each year, hundreds of all-new titles for the
best-selling Game Boy(R) Advance and Nintendo GameCube(TM) systems
extend Nintendo's vast game library and continue the tradition of
delivering a rich, diverse mix of quality video games for players of
all ages. Since the release of its first home video game system in
1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.8 billion video games globally,
creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R)
and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid(TM),
Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of
America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for
Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Check out www.dextrose.com 's Gamecube section.

ALL of that requres that you own PSO (Soon, you'll be able to rent it once and use an Action Replay to load programs from a modified memory card from then on)

Also noticed a GC Gamers kit there for only $4.99! It has a backpack to put your GC in, two third party controllers (not wireless), and an RF adapter to hook it into a TV easily. I'm not sure, but I think it has a power cord with it as well.

One of my favorite things is they advertise on the box that the backpack has a "cell phone" pouch. Heheh...like that's a make-or-break feature :) Maybe so you can get calls for people to bring your GC over. Anyway, $4.99 for all that stuff isn't bad at all.

:p OT: Nintendo newsletter Code of the month

Change your rider's handle in Acclaim's motorcycle racing game to instantly unlock some great extras. Select any single-player or multiplayer event, then choose your bike to enter the Player Setup screen. Highlight the Handle option, then press the A Button to go to the Input Name interface. Press the B Button repeatedly to delete the default name, then input the following cheat (note that this cheat begins with a period):

.LAPT18

Your handle should then change to MR BESTLAP. This cheat will unlock the multiplayer Grand Prix and all GP Bikes. After you run an event then quit, a message will show that you have unlocked seven new "skins." You can change skins by selecting the Leathers option on the Player Setup screen.
