Big LCD for PC use?

Enticed by the dropping prices on LCD TVs and monitors, I'm mulling over the idea of going from my current 19" Samsung to a 24-27" widescreen display. My main use and attraction for getting a big display is playing World of Warcraft, but I work from home so it would also be used for work. This dual use may be the toughest conflict to handle, since I have an old laptop for work that would not support a high rez like 1920x1200 or widescreen resolutions. (New one allegedly coming in 2006, though.)

Looking around here and elsewhere at reviews and user comments, I'm focusing on the Dell 2405 and some of the upcoming 26-27" panels (such as the Westinghouse LTV-27w6 which I think is S-IPS) that have 1366x768 resolution. A 30" panel wouldn't be out of the question, but 32" is probably getting too big.

So given my main criteria below, I'd appreciate any feedback.

* Large, widescreen display 24" minimum.
* Does a good job scaling non-native resolution, e.g. 1280x1024, esp. for text.
* Works well for PC games, though not necessarily the fastest FPS.
* MSRP under $1500 (read as: can be had on street under $1k).

I am using the Dell W3000. It is a 30" LCD-TV. However, it was designed with PC monitor use in mind. It has both a DVI and VGA port and eliminates overscan. If you buy a TV such as the Westinghouse, you may find overscan along with the need to run PowerStrip... Not something I was interested in.

It runs at 1280 X 768 and looks pretty good. I have absolutely no complaints for my display. My advice, which I tell everyone is check out a Dell Kiosk (normally found in malls etc...) and see it for yourself! They have both the 26" and the 30" on display.

I play WoW, CS:Source, Far Cry and they all look stunning on this display. Enable some AA, SSAA, 16X AF and play around with nHancer to improve image quality even more. It looks great 😀 At first 1280 X 768 seems low for a 30" display, but after seeing it, I doubt you will find a problem with it.

The 24" Dell FPW 2405 is a nice monitor too!

GL and happy shopping!

The monitors I use are the Dell 2405FPW 24" LCD Monitor and the Sony PremierPro SDM-P234/B 23" LCD Monitor. The resolution is 1920x1200 and they look great.

2405 has done zero things to make me utter a complaint.
and it has done many things to make me smile like the cheshire cat.

The 2405 seems like the default, can't go wrong choice.

But I did a little measuring yesterday and figured that a 32" monitor, mounted on the wall behind my desk, would be about the same perceived size, and I could reclaim some desk space. The 37" 1920x1080 models are a little too big for even that, and still outside my price range (which is really under $1k), but if there were a good 32" 1080p model, that might be the ideal solution. I haven't seen anything about 32" panels coming out at 1080, though.

all i can say is WoW

i have been looking at the westinghouse. i want one.

 Killer setup, and the Insomniax Compilation? No the player box looks like another compilation off of curse-gaming. I tried it but I didn't like the box system they had.

I have the Septre 37" 1920x1080. Great monitor/TV for the price. No complaits so far and it's from Costco, so my mind is at ease.

Thanks 😉 Actually it's Nurf UI compilation (Nurf Unit frames with Titan Bar and some other goodies). Needless to say, Ragnaros on the 37" is a sight to behold! 😉

lol, i had a 2405FW before my 37". There is NO comparison between playing on a 24" vs. a 37". Much more immersive especially when in first player games (FPS/MMORPG/ETC). Besides most TV sets have HDCP support now, so in the future you can use Mickeysoft Vista or watch HD-DVD or Blu-Ray videos. 🙂

What are the response times like on those 37" monitors?

Oh yeah and BTW that is a sick setup you got there with the Sceptre.

Aww see now you had to go and ruin it for me. I'll finally get to Ragnaros and be like "Damn, if only this was on a 37" LCD " Bastard 😉

Because a 24" far away is better? Next you will tell us to buy a 15" LCD and sit 5" away.

The 2405 is a great LCD, but it won't power my SageTV and DVD player from accross the room, it's too small.

Specs on the Sceptre are here. Shows gray to gray response time as 8ms, so black to white roughly 16ms. Haven't had any ghosting issues whatsoever in Doom 3, WoW, etc.

Specs on the comparable Westinghouse 37" can be found here. They show 12ms response time, although I'm not sure how that is measured.

And thanks for the kind comment. I'm pretty sure some 42" 1920x1080p LCD TV's will be out by the holidays, but look to pay around $2500-$3k for those. Still a bargain in my mind, but it is still a pretty penny to shell out.

heres a question for you guys w/ the 1920x180p resolution screens. Do you need a pretty high powered setup for that type of resolution?

I'm running an AMD 3500+, 1 GB RAM, and an ATI 9800 AIW video card. Do you think my rig is prepared to handle such a TV??

The fastest are up there with the VP930b, and that's WITHOUT overdrive.

I'd also recommend the 2405FPW solely because I can't find any other LCD that delivers the same quality for a low price (with the very frequent coupons).
