big HS/small F vs small HS/big F

hi guys,

i'd like to know what ur experiences and thoughts r about having:

1. a big heatsink and a smaller cfm fan
2. a small heatsink and a higher cfm fan

at the bottom of this, i'm trying to decide if the heatsink or the fan is a bigger contributor to lower cpu temps. thanks for all ur inputs!

Its both really. Having a huge fan with a small crappy heatsink is overkill on the fan side, it wont be able to help much more than a smaller fan.

On the other end, having a huge heatsink with a smaller fan, you will get reasonable performance with very little noise. Temps wouldnt be too bad, but you probably couldnt do much overclocking.

So basically they work together, a heatsink only works so well given the fan, and vice versa. The real question is whether or not you are looking to overclock, how much noise level you can take, and how much you are willing to spend.

I currently went from the amd retail HSF to:

Swiftech MCX462 with P.O.S. no-name fan and thermal compound a friend let me 'borrow' till i get my fan in, and I got a 6c change without any of my case fans on -- thats the full load temp change...

i'm have a bf6, and am thinking of getting a slotket/c900 which i hope to oc as much as i can. and this mobo doesnt let me put a huge ass hsf. my current setup (50mm globalwin) is already blocking 1 dimm slot, and most hsf's these days r 60mm and more!

after having done quite a bit of research, 1 found that coolmaster has some hsf's that might fit, but they dont seem to be be top on anyone's oc'ing list. dr thermal has a big v77 hs, and a smallish fan. the venerable golden orb seems to have shrunk, so i'm not sure how it'll perform. i doubt the 1u hsf's would be of much help when i oc.

another thing i could do is to rig 1 up myself -- a smaller version of the pep66 perhaps. what do u guys think? i'd appreciate any suggestions or comments. thanks.
