So I've virtually decided to go with the TT big typhoon, but the 800+ grams or so hanging out horizontally worries me .....even though I've read its mostly at the base, thats still alot of constant load on the mobo IMO.
So has anyone heard, read or seen mobo damage from using a heavy cooler such as this, every article says be carefull when moving your pc with such a cooler mounted, and its not just this cooler as there are many in this wieght range..

I've never heard of anyone breaking their mobos that way, though I guess that the bracket would break long before the mobo does. What damage a 800+ gramm cooler does while tumbling down your case afterwards is anyone's guess.

It's probably safe if you don't move your case much. Still, if you're unsure, a Thermalright XP-120 or SI-120 will give you comparable performance and no such worries.

Like suszterpatt said, it's prolly your plastic bracket that's going to crack first... You could alwas buy a metal backplate as well... Another alternative is the AC Freezer 64 Pro, costs a lot less than the Big Typhoon and the ThermalRights, but cools just about as great... Weighs "only" 460g...

Plus, you have to realize the backplate is sandwiched between the back of the motherboard and the inside of the case wall. It doesn't have much room to move, so it can't really "snap" or anything like that. If anything were to go, it would be the bracket on the front, to which the retention clips attach. Even still, I wouldn't worry that much. If you were going to ship the computer it may be an issue, or if you like to take it horse back riding ;)

It might not break off completely, but at least even a slight snap is enough to damage your CPU... When the cooler's not firmly pressed against it anymore, you will definately fry it...

I recently purchase the TT Big Typhoon and I'm quite happy with it. It was a pain to install in my Antec Sonata II but now my temp is about 15c lower then the cheap value fan under full load.

Mind you I would be carefull when moving it.
