Big Display for PC gaming...

Should I get myself a big screen plasma HDTV or a great HD-projector for PC gaming...

unless it can do 1080p I wouldn't. Low res gaming sucks. I have seen a couple of LCD HDTV's that can do this.

It depends.

How close will you be to it? It won't look good if you get something that 40"+ and then sit 2 feet away. If you'll be sitting a good distance away then it should look good.

I'm personally someone who values higher resolution, and so I'd have to have one that does at least 1080 natively. BenQ has just released a 37" LCD TV that is 1920x1080, I believe it sells for $2000 or less.

I'd say that or a Dell 2405FPW would be better.

Dell 2405 can do 1080p, but for PC gaming? Even the best gfx cards would chug along at a 1900x1200 native resolution. Good for HD Xbox/PS2 games maybe?

Possibility of burn-in exists for plasmas. I wouldn't risk it.

False. 1920x1200 is very playable for a highend PC.

Newer/better plasmas are not nearly as susceptible to burn-in as the older/cheapers ones are. I do the vast majority of my gaming. as well as some web surfing, on one of these and I have not seen even the slightest bit of image-retention, let alone burn in. Heck, I even left the thing on accidently all night with the computer off which left it with a black 4:3 screen with grey bars on either side; when I found it like that I immediately opened a all white webpage to check for burn in and there was none to be found.

As for resolution, obviously higher never hurts, but I am pleased with the image quality of this 852x480 screen running 1280x720; and this is coming from a guy who always shoots for 1600x1200 on his 21" trinitron. The scaling abilities on the screen is quite good so 720p in 3d games looks quite a bit better than 480p, though 1080p doesn't show much difference from 720p. I'd imagine that an HD plasma would show the same benefit between 720p and 1080p.

I'm very happy with how games look on my 4805 (852x480). I feed it a 720p signal from my radeon 9800pro and it scales very nicely down to 480p. I haven't taken any decent screenshots of it besides a couple quick ones of me walking around an empty CS:S map (pics in sig under "projector").

I don't play games on it really, I've just tried it out a couple times. My not playing on it has nothing to do with the image quality, it's just more of a hassle to play without a nice desk to put my mouse and keyboard on. How I have it setup now, I have to have my keyboard in my lap and my mouse on my futon if I want to play on the projector... less than ideal 😉

I vote projector. I game at 800x600 on my X1 when using my PC and 640x480 when using my Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PS2. You may say resolution is too low and I would normally agree but when you sit 14 feet away on a comfortable couch and playing on 100"+ screen, it looks great. There is nothing like shooting at lifesize figures when playing FPS and racing on a giant screen.

You can get front LCD projectors like Panny 700AE or Sony HS51 which will do 1280x768 native for pretty cheap. I'm waiting until 1080P DLP or LCD projectors are ~2k.

I own a Dell 2405 so yeah I know. My rig actually handles CSS with 2x AA and 8xAF at that resolution just fine.

Either way he was talking about a large plasma or a projector which I personally don't know any that do 1080p.

A TV that does 720P or 1080i is probably fine in all truthfulness. Just don't sit to close I would say.

Personally, I find it hard read text in games playing on a big screen. Which can hurt your gameplay in certain games. Sitting about 10 feet from mine is great for gaming (little blurry) but the text is a garbled mess.

You aren't still running svideo to that DLP are you? It should be crystal clear with a digtal connection as long as your TV is in proper working order.

My 4805 doesn't look so hot in windows for text when it's not at its native res due to the resizing. It's still perfectly readable, but the scaling down makes it look a little goofy for me.

I haven't tried text in games really. I imagine something like WoW (don't own it) might be a pain on my setup.

Use a PC monitor for PC gaming.



And 1920x1200 is very playable on a quite a few systems.

Text is fine for me at 800x600 on my X1. I've zero problem reading it and I use it to surf the web while I'm in my theater room.
