Big deal with XP

Ok, I've used XP, I've installed XP... I can't see what the big deal is... The OS is pretty stabe, so is Win2k. The interfaces look way to fruity for me, even when you switch them back to standard view. The OS is a HOG! Not only that, but at work, this guy installed it on an 800mhz athalon, w/ 512 MB ram, geforce2gts vid card, and an Asus mobo (i forget), I installed Linux-Mandrake 8.1 on my 566 celery w/ 512 MB of ram, a Voodoo 3 3000, and some crappy Epox board. I put the exact same background on (and mind you, his vid card has DDR on it) and the background was somewhat pixelated... Mine? Smooth... The guy actually got pissed, he blamed it on the fact that it was a .BMP, which has nothing to do with it... I think the icing on the cake was the background, was a picture of Tux drinking a juice box saying XP sucks... You've all seen it...
So tell me, why is XP so damn good?? Oh did I mention, Mandrake is legitimately free?

Well for me, Windows does everything i want it to, and Linux doesnt. Namely run a boat load of games. I love the interface, and i'm used to is. There's no reason for me at all to use Linux, except for my curisoity

I know, I'm a big gamer too.. But I don't use XP for games. I use 2k or 98. I'm just get upset when I see all these people get wet over XP, I don't see the BIG deal...

<< I don't know, ask the other 90% of computer users that use Windows too. >>

1st off, what the hell do you think this post is about? I AM asking the other percent.
2nd off, I'm not bashing windows, I'm friggen asking what is so damn special about XP... I'm not saying it sucks, I'm seriously asking... is there more to it other than aesthetics, because if not, I prefer KDE2.2...

yawn, this topic has been debated to death.

TheOmegaCode, have you visited the microsoft support forums. well if you haven't, i suggest you go and visit them.

Alot of users on those forums, don't even know the simple functions of xp, like changing the resolution from control panel, or where the my documents folder is, or adjusting toolbars, etc.

If these same users can't figure out XP, which is suppost to be a "fruity, toy os". How the hell are they going to figure out Linux???

I'll go check out the Microsoft forums...
For the record, I'm not bashing microsoft products, and I'm not tying to get people to run linux/unix whatever... I just want to know why these people like this OS so much...

I love your reasoning, your Mandrake box displays prettier pictures than your friends XP Box. Especially pointing out his card has DDR ram. Listen, A friggin' cirrus logic onboard video chip can display a sharp true color background for crying out loud.

Your friend needs a new video driver, and you need a clue.

I like linux, but XP works great for what I use my rig for. I don't mind paying for an OS, and Linux is fine for playing around in, but if I want to play some games or do any real work with my rig, its XP. I find it to be extremely stable, and I haven't noticed any slow down since migrating from win2k at all, more compatability, better video capture and gaming as well.

Same here. Only that the Windows is the thing I would use only for curiosity... 😉

Lemme see if I read your post correctly...

You like Madrake because the splash screen is prettier than the Windows XP one?!

I think the movie I am Sam is based on your life story.

No, no, no! I am not posting this out of hostility of any sort. If it seems that way, then you have been missled. There are ALOT of things that I do with my linux box that he can't do with hist XP box. Run a nice DNS server, an APACHE server, I have a built in VI editor, the abitity to run more than one different flavor of X11, the ability to run a superior half-life server (for those of you who game). Now from windows, I have seen an ease-of-use that many linux distro's lack. They are very hardware compatible, as well as software compatible. However 2k and XP are less compatible as 98 when it comes to these things. As for this guy needing a better graphic card, it is a very respectable video card. Not only that, but I have a dual boot, and the same background on both OS's. Linux-Mandrake and Win2k, and I the background is also less than smooth on Windows2k (something I should have mentioned before). Also, a splash screen is a graphic, or screen that is brought up the first time a program/OS is launced. Not a background. My linux splash screen is alot of text! Watching a kernel load is not as "pretty" as a microsoft banner, but it's more helpfull. I simply asked if there was nothing more to windows XP than aesthetics, I'll stick to KDE2.2, because if all it has to offer is eye candy, IN MY OPINION, I've got something better. So what new features has XP brought to the table?

For me XP has a 31 second boot time to start menu. that alone beats any OS to date"except maybe linux non gui". secondly I can be an idiot and run it.. or i can be a pro and run it by turning off all the crap for people who don't know anything. It's very user friendly I'm a fan of cutomization and one thing i always liked about linux was the ability to skin just about anything. Now i have that in winxp My icq matches my desktop WOW.. what a concept.. I've not been a fan of microsoft's OS's in the past but i am coming to like Xp very much. Stability being primary. I game 2 hours a night or more"avg" and do not find myself rebooting just because this or that has screwed up my OS. People who are perfectly happy staring at text are sure to enjoy linux command line interface.. myself.. i even skinned console 😀 As for not seeing it boot. Well.. your right.. i much prefer to see whats happening behind that stinkin bmp.. but since i learned how to create and edit that BMP i'm no longer so concerned with it"i know i should be" . BOOTVIS will let you see boot order and processes. "and speed your boot" Is it a hog? Nah.. I prefer an operating system that will make use of my ram.. instead of ignoring it's existence.. I am sure it takes quite a bit more resources than linux but i dare anyone here to take a complete newbie and show them linux and within 5 minutes that person will be online "modem user" connected to the internet checking their email. it's still a bit early for linux to be my main os but it does rock for what it is!!! As far as gaming is concerned windows 2000 won't even play most of the games Xp will. the choice is no longer windows 2000 or windows 98.. for gamers the choice should be windows XP. Sure.. i hate that stinkin new start menu.. i hate the desktop icon that comes with it.. but CUSTOMIZATION and tweakin are why most of the people in this forum come here. I've added probably 100 customizations to XP with no loss of stability "600 duron@950" Since sept i have had 9 or 10 bluescreens.. and those related to improper driver setup or NV4display errors "caused by me no doubt" when people talk about running Apache their obviously not going to be happy using MS software for much of anything. There are more limitations in both types of OS "nix and xp" than we can shake a stick at. thankfully MS has used some of the better features of linux and improved upon windows 2000 quite nicely. They've taken a whack at higher compatability"30 days uptime vs 15 win98" slightly more idiot proof with common tasks in folders,A much improved boot time in most enviroments, Support for nearly every known newer device and 90% compatability with every known game since 98 came out. Blaming them because your device isn't supported is pretty weak. They've given you a good foundation it's not their fault your "insert blah device here" isn't supported most likely it's because your devices manufacturer only cares about sales and not support. Any device that conforms to WDM or works in windows 2000 should work in windows XP "straight from MS's Mouth" The problem we all had with windows 2000 when it came out was CRAPPY driver support "anyone running a RADEON to this date knows what i mean" Xp is neither the be all or the endall of operating systems. but they have taken a real stab at fixing most of the complaints people have had to date. I'm going to be using it for a long while to come. Some of you will too.. for those of you who don't I truly hope you get as much enjoyment and performance from your operating system as i have come to expect from mine.

Anyone curious as to how my boot screen looks can see it here.

have a nice week!

I understand your question about XP.
I think most people run some form of Windows for the same reason most people online are using AOL for an ISP instead of what I like to call a raw internet connection. It's the comfort of not having to know how something works, but instead only having to know if you click here your desired results will happen. Also it's human nature to resist change. Those of you who doubt that, consider how often you listen to your kids' music. 🙂
More Windows users means to me that as a whole, society thinks change is bad. Another example can be found by considering how long it takes the average consumer to buy the latest operating system. "It's bad until I have to upgrade", then they're the last ones to sing the praises of the now somewhat new operating system. Also, because Windows, in whatever form, is the most used OS, there are more programs written for it, which means it is the most versitle way to go.
Just my opinion of course.

Thx for taking the time to actually answer why you like windows XP. I've only installed it and messed with it for a few minutes. The guy I work with (who is supposed to be a computer techy) LOVES XP, but I am the one who had to install it, and get it to log onto our server, and get his alternate accounts administrative access. With only doing that, I find it alot easier to do with Win2k. It sounds to me like XP is a really kick arse OS for home use. The guy I work with just says, "Oooh, Pretty..." I have never heard an intelligent comment about how the OS is stuctured, or anything. Thanks for the insight...

Thanks. My pleasure. I like XP and I can make it look just like ME or W2K if I wanted to. I've settled on a look that falls somewhere in the middle of those and the outta the box XP look. I also like XP because I've been wrestling with computers since 1985 and I'm just tired of having to think about it much. I'm not about to switch to AOL, but I'll let XP take my hand from time to time now and just enjoy the programs I run and the games I play.
🙂
