Big Bad Volcano

Just recently started to assemble a PC I'm building for a mate, it consists of Asus A7V333 mobo, Athlon XP 1600+, 256MB Samsung DDR, Thermaltake Volcano 7 . To put the bits in I bought a cheapo case, it's dimensions are 340mm(H) x 200mm(W) x 435mm(D). Everything was going fine and dandy until I turn the PC on and look at the temperatures in BIOS. I notice that the CPU temp is extremely high. I open the case and realise that as the Volcano 7 is absolutely huge, the airflow is being totally blocked by my PSU! Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem? I'm not sure what to do, I have the options of buying a new bigger case, a new smaller fan, or bolting the PSU on somewhere else on the case, which might be a bit dodgy! Anyone got any ideas what I can do? I'd prefer not to spend much money if any...I do plan on overclocking the CPU somewhat, so I need a good fan for that, I am considering selling the fan and replacing it with a smaller one. Any ideas how much a mint Volcano 7 would be worth anyone?

Thanks for any help,

Ah you have a Small Midi Tower yeah? I have used a couple of those and never really put anything more than a duron or a lower XP in them because anything more meant more heat and the need for a bigger fan, which the sideways PSU used to block the airflow....with one board/case/HSF combo, the fan was practically flush against the PSU, I didn't even bother finishing building that!

I would say that you need to look at a new case, there are still penty of cheap ones out there that have the PSU horizontally mounted...mine for example has this and was only £20.

Thanks for the speedy reply 🙂 Can you tell me where you got this case from please? (if u are not allowed to post urls then please can you send it to my personal email - cryptic@nildram.co.uk) Sounds like the best option because really I do want to keep this fan as it's nice and quiet and powerful!

Thanks for your help! 🙂

I got my case from Ebuyer UK but they have a US site now too Ebuyer US

It's a JNC case...has front USB and Audio....not sure if they still do it....but it's pretty good....300W PSU is adequate but you may want something more powerful and better quality although I have built XP2000+ systems using the same PSU before.

They have a big selection.

p.s: make sure you pick "full size midi"....the dimensions should let you know, feel free to email me and I "may" have an idea as to whether it's a vertical or horizontal mount PSU.
