Biden asks the public for transition funds on Twitter.

Maybe they thought it would reflect badly on Trump? Seems pretty tone deaf, regardless of the current administration's refusal to cooperate.

It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this but joe and Harris have more money than me at the moment.

All new admins fundraise for transition expenses, it is just more usual that this happens through private bundlers instead of a direct request.

Considering what Trump is up to on the fundraising side this doesn't really raise an eyebrow with me.

Time to step up all you AT millionaires! Or maybe he could ask hunter to spot him a few bucks, I heard he got some money lol...
OMG look at him begging!! We need a real bidness man in office!! Someone who doesn't do bankruptcies like a loser!! Someone who totally doesn't use charity money to fund his own purchases and lawsuits. A real dealmaker is what we need! 😀

Sounds like just another way in which Trump's (and the Republicans') behaviour is damaging democracy.

If it weren't for Trump's madness the transition would be funded by the taxpayer - instead it's effectively been privatised, and become another opportunity for those with money to buy influence. Not that the US system isn't full of such opportunities anyway. It's not a good look for Biden, but it's clear that the blame lies squarely with Trump.

Why does the US system depend so strongly on voluntarily-observed norms? It clearly makes it very vulnerable to 'gaming', indeed it openly encourages attempts to subvert democracy. As I understand it there have been several legal moves in the past to formalise the transition process (most recently because it was suggested that the delayed 2000 transition contributed to 911 happening or at least hampered the response), but clearly none of them went far enough. It's amazing to me how much it takes to fix glaring flaws in the US system. Even to recognise black people as human beings took one of the bloodiest civil wars in history. The simplest, most obviously-needed changes are almost impossible. Which to me suggests it's just a very badly-designed system.
