Just end Social Security already. Let people keep that money in their paychecks. I'm sure the smart ones will invest wisely, the stupid ones will work until they are 79 or until they drop dead. What better incentive to quit the shitty jobs and work harder to make yourself more successful than by removing that safety net for poor people.

Bootstraps people, bootstraps.

Fine and none of these has resulted in nothing of significance being done. The most significant change was tying it to the Consumer Price Index and Inflation by Nixon.

I also think SS needs to be updated as things change in order to provide for future generations. I do not think it will be gutted or abolished. This FUD has been passed around for a Long time and look it's still here.
Remove the cap on taxable income.

In theory yes, people would just work till 79.
In practice, people on SSI aren't working (that's why they're on SSI).
You'd see
1) worse homelessness and crime as a result of the loss of income and government support
2) more use of hospitals as shelters for the homeless at tremendous costs
3) food insecurity for elders and the disabled
4) increased general healthcare spending across the board (there's a phrase that says an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Its very much true when it comes to healthcare expenditures. However if people can't afford that ounce of prevention...)

We are the richest country in the world. Yet we can't figure out how to take care of our sick, disabled, children, and elderly when relatively poorer civilized countries have basically figured it out? Look at homelessness rates in S. Korea (its near zero). Why? Really interesting anti-homelessness policies is why.

This was posted in the "Bernie still has it" thread, but I'd like to point out that at 13:25 Bernie addresses much of what is being said here, but not being acknowledged by the OP - that Social security, Medicare and Medicaid have been on the chopping block for years by the GOP. 150 GOP members have already said they will allow the U.S. to default on debt payments to force cuts to social programs. Perhaps Biden taking credit for an inflation adjusted increase is stupid, but holding the entire economy hostage to cut payments to folks who have paid into it their entire lives is really, really cruelly stupid.

Pull your panties out of your butt... LOL

What are you laughing about? That was literally Ryan's plan, keeping Medicare for the boomers because of promises made to them and converting the rest of us to the trash private insurance system via vouchers while we still got to pay for the boomers Medicare.

And what happened?

Ryan is gone and you still have Medicare.

All this panty twisting for nothing.

I guess we don't take comfort in the fact that Republicans keep trying to end Medicare and Social Security but fail.

If someone came over to your house and tried to rob you but failed that's definitely a lot better than succeeding but it also doesn't make me want to invite them over again.

Just to be correct pcgeek, your position is that we should only care about this issue when republicans actually cut or gut Medicare/ss then right?

I’m curious if you take this position on everything else. For example, the right has been complaining about guns and democrats wanting to ban them. Is there a single post of yours where you say this isn’t an issue because it hasn’t happened yet?

Republicans have also been saying for years that they want to make abortion illegal, is that an issue people should have ignored until laws are passed that make abortion illegal?

Should the right shut up about immigration until democrats actually open the borders and pass laws that allow illegal immigrants to take American jobs?

You've constantly denied that they Aren't. Trying. To. Do. It.

Are you now admitting that yes, this is exactly what they are trying to do, exactly as we have been saying it?

You're "Well they didn't get to do it because it is thoroughly unpopular and they lose because they always promise to do it" isn't the same as your constant denial about their very public policy.

Do you understand how your post above (and this thread) is the type of thing that comes from the mouth of a disingenuous prick?

There are some that have mentioned it. That doesn't make it a Republican agenda or policy.
