Bicyclist Awaiting Ambulence Hit Again
By Associated Press
Mon Sep 11, 2:50 PM

GREENVILLE, S.C. - A driver has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries after her car hit a bicyclist who was in the road waiting on an ambulance to treat him for injuries after being hit by another car.

Shannon Harris of Anderson turned herself in to investigators Sunday night after initially leaving the scene of the accident, said Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles, a spokeswoman for the Highway Patrol.

The bike rider, whose name has not been released, was in serious condition at Anderson Area Medical Center, Hiles said. He was not wearing a helmet and his bike lacked proper lighting, Hiles said.

The bicyclist was hit first by a Nissan driven by Erin Hartness of Anderson, Hiles said. No charges were filed in that case.

While he was waiting in the road for an ambulance, the bicyclist was hit by the second car, whose driver stopped for a moment before leaving the scene.

OK, I'll admit that I'm no hardcore biker, and I might be missing some fundamental secret of bicycling...

But if you're happily riding down the middle of the road with no helmet and no lights, and get hit by a car, should your first response necessarily be to crawl back into the middle of the road to wait for help? Maybe the thread title should read "Darwin makes two attempts, but fails to deliver"

At the same time, there's more than enough bicyclists around that feel they own the road, and automatically get right of way, even when they're in the wrong. Too many of them forget they're required to follow the same rules of the road as a motor vehicle driver, and selectively ignore those rules whenever they feel like it.

While we probably don't know all the facts about this case, I can't believe a cyclist was stupid enough to be waiting in the road for an ambulance, unless he was too injured to be moved (or move himself). I wonder where the driver of the first vehicle was, and where his vehicle was, and whether he had his 4-way flashers on to warn other drivers?

Bottom line? Not too bright cyclist, out riding in low light conditions, finally had fate catch up with his butt, and got hit by a motor vehicle. Even dumber driver of 2nd vehicle lost her mind after hitting cyclist, and left scene. Not the first time a driver has done this, and likely won't be the last. Squabbling over who was wrong is just a waste of time, since they both had plenty of fault on their sides.

Hmm, I'm a fairly serious cyclist and I can say riding without lights on a dark road is, IMO, a very bad idea anywhere outside of a well-lit urban area. In fact today I knew I'd be out past sunset so I put the 30W headlight set on the bike.

I'm going to guess that the initial hit left the cyclist able to call for an ambulance but unable to get off the road. If that's not the case, all I can say is "WTF?".

So from these two quotes, I gather that this was at night, and he was either able to call an ambulance or someone called an ambulance for him? So then why was he waiting IN the road?

Cause he got hit by a car and had broken legs or something similar? Youv'e never heard that you're not supposed to move injured people?

If I had to choose between possibly causing extra damage to my legs by moving or possibly having my skull crushed by another vehicle, guess which one I'd choose? Assuming he could, he's a complete idiot for not moving over to the side.

Yeah, but if he was unable to move, the first driver certainly shouldn't have left the scene after calling an ambulance. They should have used their car to block the road, with 4-way flashers on.

I dunno, it's just a weird story any way you slice it.

i got hit by a car before. flipped right over the hood and landed on my back(only 4 months after a neck fusion YIKES!). luckily the only injury i had was that my whole left arm was scraped up and had a "mat/gym burn" about 5 inches wide in a circle on my leg. also, it was 100% the drivers fault because according to the police report he was turning right and was looking to the left while turning right(neglecting to look to the right)/

Are you really that stupid? None of us have all the facts, we have some information but really all we can do is guess about the situations that caused this accident. Hell, we don't even know that it was dark out when the accident happened.

So tell me, is it true that ignorance is bliss?
