Bicycle repair: Need new gripshift

Miramonti

Lifer
I'm hoping someone can link me up to a replacement gripshift for a 3-speed front derailleur, which is stripped. I'm not sure how compatible different gripshifts are and if there is a certain spec I need.

I'd love to get one from Amazon and Ebay because I have credit with them, but otherwise any reputable etailer will do. TIA.

I have grip shifts on my Turner Sultan. I like 'em well enough that I didn't swap them out for the SRAM x9 trigger shifters I had lying around unused.

So true....even SRAM is moving to rapidfire-type shifters. Works so much better.

SRAM recently announced their ten speed grip shifters, xx and x0. MSRP of about $300 for xx grip shifters.

The market is small but it exists, even at the high end.

If it was me I would shy away from grip shift. I would replace the grip shift with the thumb shift(not sure what its called). I heard from experts that grip shift is a pain in the ass.

Maybe 5 years ago I finally replaced the grip shift on my bike with NOS DeoreXT rapidfire shifters I got on ebay (only place I could find new 7-speed stuff).

Agreed.

I'm not sure who decided grip shift was a good idea.
They are fine for the light to moderate stuff. But, when you are hammering single track, and constantly braking and changing speeds for a tight switchback, straight a ways, etc. the rapid fires really start to shine. It is for that heavier application where I think they are indispensable. And since they are perfectly suitable for all other usage too, I opt for the better to have it than not option.

Outside of my single speed, I have equipped all of my mtb's with grip shift and I race. I prefer the simplicity and never had an issue shifting/braking. Shifting with your index finger/thumb while braking with your middle and third finger. I guess to each their own.

This is for a bike that I ride only a few times a year and usually on paved trails. Fairly non-intense, with the wife unit.

If the prices are anything like this, that's more investment than I need.

However if this is an option, that would be doable.

Don't forget to pick up new grips along with the shifters if you buy those linked items.

Thanks. I noticed the ones linked look shorter than the one on the bike.

What do you mean by "stripped"?

It stays in "1". If I shift it to 2 or 3, it doesn't lock and slides back. My assumption is that's wear and not repairable.

I'm not a fan of them either. You still lose leverage shifting and always have to be careful not to shift them if riding hard. I'd actually prefer a thumb shifter now that I think about it.

If anyone has a few moments to recommend/link a thumb shifter, I'd be appreciative. I assume it would need a new cable. Preferably Amazon, Ebay, and budget minded since this is infrequent casual use. (perhaps the shimano I linked above?)

The cheap shimano trigger shifter will likely work fine as long as it's for a triple. Don't think chainring spacing has changed with differing numbers of gears and at least for the past several years up to 9-speed (I have no 10-sp experience), the front shifters and derailleurs from shimano and sram are interchangeable. Shimano and sram are NOT interchangeable for the rear shifter/derailleur.

Note the use of the word "likely." This is not a statement that I'm 100% certain it'll work.

Just go to amazon and type in "sram trigger shifter". Or go to ebay and type in "sram trigger shifter".

Choose whichever search result is cheap enough for you.

Given that, no sense in having to adapt to a new shifter mechanism.

Agreed. It is all about what works for you. I have fairly big hands, and the tapping proved faster and more precise than twisting did for me. The Cannondale I had back in the 90's came with grip shift. When I switched it out to try rapid fires, I never even considered going back.

Good to know, thanks. The front derailleur is shimano, but the back one is sram.
