I have been running this combo since they came out over 2 years ago. Lately my computer feels like its too slow to do anything so I guess it's time to move on. I have a fixed budget so only have about 300 bucks for this upgrade. This is my current config:
300A oc'ed 450
Abit BH6 version 1.01 (old one)
128 megs of PC-100 generic
Geforce265 Visionteak not OC'ed
Aureal 2 SuperQuad
generic 56k PCI winmodem
I really want to upgrade only the CPU for now, if i have to then I will buy a new MB but I really want to reuse my BH6 if it's possible. The options i have seen so far would be either to get those new celeron2's (especially the 566 and try to OC it to 800+)which I really want to avoid since it seems like it gets spanked left and right by both Duron and lower speed P3 or to get a new MB and go with Duron which I also dont want to since the MB for Duron seem a little too expensive.
What I really want is to have a P3-800 100MHz bus (around $230 on pricewatch)the problem is I dont think it will run on my MB. Any suggestion on what MB I should get to go with this? also what MB supports FCPGA wihout having used an slocket?
Im not planning to overclock my processor this time and also need atmost 3 PCI slots for my MB so any idea what cheap and stable Mb would fall in this catergory?

I'm in the same boat as you, BH6 1.01, 300A@464, feeling a little sluggish, not much to spend.....

I believe that a flip-chip PIII of any speed will work on this board using a good slocket.

I've read in these forums that a PIII-700 is about equal to a Celeron2 566@850 for most tasks. I had been thinking about going the C566@850 route for about $115+shipping (cpu+slocket) but I hear only about 50% of these chips will make it that high, that's a little too risky since if it doesn't work 566 isn't a very big improvement over 464, at least not $115 worth.

So I think I would go with the fastest flip-chip PIII I could afford, get an MSI or maybe Abit slocket, and go with that. I figure a retail PIII-700 w/heatsink/fan on an Abit slocket would cost $213+shipping from Mwave, which is a trustworth vendor, not some dodgy pricewatch bottom-feeder. Then gently overclock to at least 784 MHz (112x7), and call it a day.

Going the Duron route is just too expensive, in my opinion, unless you plan to start from scratch.

I am also in the same boat, with a c450a and 128 (2 64 sticks) of PC 100

if I were in your guys situation (which I am) I would seriously consider the celeron 633 deal at either buy.com or onvia which is being talked about in the hot deals forum, that is the road I think
I am gonna go-heck 76 bucks shipped for a chip that can possibly do 950, and if not it is still a good deal faster than the 450a

hope you get some more ideas but this is the road I think I am taking

Was in same boat as u - just upgraded few weeks ago, to the new BH6/C464a:

Asus CUSL2 + P3-700 cB0 @ 933 (1.75v)

Very nice.

Why not a retail PIII 700 and a MSI slocket? It will cost you about $220 shipped, more or less. You should be able to get 784 Mhz using the 112 FSB if your RAM is halfway decent. You can add a CUSL2 and an Alpha later and go for a Gig.

The old BH6's don't have the 1/4 divider in them, making 133 hard to get.

And I have a BH6 1.01, using a C2-566@952, runs a lot better than my 366@458

Keep your BH-6...I checked w/ a friend who has a little computer store, and he said that with the latest bios, you can put an 800 on it, but even w/ pc 100 ram, you should probably be able to get a 700 to go to 784 (which is more than 11 hehehe); the extra couple of mzh won't make a difference, and the chip is cheaper. There are still some slot 1 coppermine 600 and 700s out there, so you can save the 25 bucks for the converter, too. I've got a coppermine 600 doing 744 rock solid stable on a BH-6, but I've got good Mushkin PC133 ram. You will be MUCH happier w/ the performance of the PIII versus the celeron; it was like night an day when I went from my o/c'ed 300A/450 to a PIII 500 in terms of frame rates and load times...much more than the 50mzh difference should make. Can't speak for the celeron 2s, though, don't know how they compare to the PIIIs.

two options:
1) not sure what HD you are running but for 300 bucks, I'd get a IBM 75GXP 30GB (or 15GB) + a Celeron2. Yeah, the C2 gets its ass whooped by the duron but for the price and the OC potential, the C2 is one sweet chip for the money and the 75GXP really is one fast ah heck. It lets you keep your current mobo but this option really is just to help hold you over for the next complete system.

2) P3-700. Stay @ 700Mhz or so for now, when you feel like getting a CUSL2 or something, 933 will be easier. This would be the step to a newer system but it seems like technology won't be be around the level of the i815E in the next few months with DDR just around the corner.

hmph, thinking about it somemore...I think you could do a P3-700 and a IBM 75GXP 15GB or even a 30GB version. This would be my choice.

If you're not going to swap out the mobo, you may as well go w/ a Celo 566 which can be overclocked quite easily into the 800s for only $100 or so.

Otherwise, an Abit KT7 and Duron 700 might get to 1GHZ will only cost you about $260. All of your other components should work fine w/ the exception of the PS that may or may not.
