BFG Tech Geforce 6800Ultra...is it worth it?

I'm building an AMD 64 X2 (toledo core) system, with 2 30(something)GB Raptor drivers, putting them on a RAID 0 array with striping, and a 400GB storage drive. Oh all the drives are SATA. I'm going to be using the Gigabyte SLI motherboard, and I'm wondering what kind of video card I should get.

I'm looking to get the BFG GeForce 6800Ultra, I was wondering if there is something better with SLI support, and at least 256MB of memory (preferably GDDR3).

Any ideas?

How much are you looking to pay for the 6800U? (I'm not sure how much they go for these days).

Oh, and welcome to the forums. ;)

Thank you, I heard about this forum from a friend/co-worker....Any way,its on new egg for $695.00 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143028). I'm going to be buying this whole system over like the next 3-4 months. So I'm looking for a card that will tide me over till I can afford another one or a better one.

USES: I'll be playing Doom3, BattleField 2, Half Life 2, World of Warcraft, Call Of Duty, and C&C Generals. (those are the major games that I play/gonna play)

holy crap...QFT. The 512MB 6800GT/U's aren't even close to worth it, in my opinion. The 7800GTX will be cheaper and perform quite a bit better. (And will still be SLI-capable, should you decide to add a second one in the future).

yeah the 512mb 6800U isnt worth the money IMO, it gets stompped by the 7800GTX, and yes like dug says if your going to spend that much on a GFX card, then actually save some money and get a 7800GTX which is simply in a different class of performance. i think you like Transparency AA better than the extra 512mb. plus you wont need to be upgrading in a hurry with a 7800GTX

ok wow well u seem like your about to drop quite a lot on that system. either hold out till R520, or get a Evga 7800GTX KO edition.. nvidia is about to release the new forceware drivers which they have claimed to have a serious boost in performance. leaked versions of the drivers have provided some review sites with the ability to test these claims for themselves and generally see a 10 fps boost overall, with increased averages.. 7800 over the 6800 for sure.

As for your raptors, 2x34gb raptors? why not 1x74gb raptor? the 74gb ones are newer and actually perform substantially better than the old smaller ones. running harddrives in raid0 can result in lots of hours of work and annoyance if one were to fail. youd be playing it safer getting the single one along with your planned 400. Motherboard wise, how about the DFI lanparty, if you plan on overclocking. if you dont, i suppose a gigabyte would suffice. anyway good luck on ur new rig ;)

I think it has already been said, but I will add my support.

Go with a 7-series card. Either a 7800GTX or possibly consider going with SLI'ed 7800GT's. You could do dual GT's for about $750 for both cards. Not exactly a bargain, but it would smoke that 6800 Ultra for about $50 more.

i see that my brain works differently than most. Most see the OP is willing to spend $700 on a video card, and they suggest that he go with a single 7800GTX and save money and get better performance. Whereas, I see that the OP is willing to spend $700, and I suggest adding a bit more money to blow the orginal purchase out of the water :)

...not passing judgement on anything, just an observation... Maybe this is why I let my wife pay the bills :)

Either way you go, as long as you don't get that overpriced 6800 Ultra with the 512MB, you'll be doing great.

...welcome to AT forums :)

edit: my post looks like it could have been made by Appopin with all those smileys. :)

;)

...there, now it really does

You can almost buy TWO 7800GT's which would absolutely axe-murder that 6800U.... oh my god.

If you were willing to pay that much money for that card, u might as well buy 2 7800 gt's and SLI them and that would total own it up or just get 1 7800 gtx. Preferrably the 7800 gtx because u save yourself alot of money and 2 7800 gt is just overkill.

I was a firm believer in intelligent design until I read your post. $700 for a 6800U? Please do the human race a favor and castrate yourself.

Please do us a favor and don't be an asshat to a new member. He came here to get information which he is getting, not to be rediculed. If he knew better he wouldn't have asked.

it's called RESEARCH. you're lucky everybody likes to spoonfeed you all the information you need. look at benchmarks. they show which cards play games faster or slower. lets pretend taht you get a 7800gtx for $500. ok great. guess what. for $150-200 the next gen mid-high cards will outperform that $500 card. are you sure that you want to shell out the cash??

Hey thanks a bunch for the info john, you could have just as easily not wasted your, or my own time and not posted. In fact do us all a favor and dont bother posting until you have some helpful information. Im pretty sure we have all asked questions before when thinking about dishing out more then 300+ on a single item. Thanks!

As much as I don't want to get into this, that 6800U is a total waste. A single 7800GTX would ravage it. A 7800GTX comes close to ravaging TWO of them.. Plus, it's cheaper. If you want to fork out that much money, go for two 7800GT's, which would put you right up there at the top. Honestly, spending that much for a 6 series at this point is just a waste. Save yourself some money, and get an even better card like the 7800GT or GTX :)
