BFG GEFORCE FX 5500OC 256MB AGP

the 5xxx series is the crappest cards ever compared to their counterparts dont bother

Also the 256mb of ram will do nothing for it since the core and probably the bit with wont utalize it

just wonder what nVidia card I should get for the comparable price or I should go straight with the ATI card?

Also I saw 9600XT has 500 Core speed and 600 Ram speed, isn't it very close to 9800 Pro which has 580 Core speed and 760 ram speed? Thanks!

No, they aren't. The 9600XT has only 4 pixel pipelines and a 128-bit memory bus whereas the 9800 Pro has 8 pixel pipelines and twice the bandwidth of the 9600XT via its 256-bit memory bus. The 9800 Pro is the way to go.🙂

This is the closest performance you can get to that 9600XT in Nvidia's lineup:

Leadtek Nvidia 6200 AGP 128MB

I'd take the 6200 over the 9600XT myself. It's about the same speed at stock as the 9600xt, but the 6200 has a lot of potential to overclock and unlock the extra 4 pipelines.

🙂

yep, go for the 6200! unlock those pipelines and overclock it, and you have a card "almost" as good as a 6600gt, but better then a 6600 vanilla.

plus, the 6200 (the whole 6xxx series does) has shader model 3.0, while as ALL ati cards have 2.0 now, but i read that if you want to play games that come out late 2005/2006 (unreal 3 engine games, elder scrolls 4: oblivion) that you NEED shader model 3.0

dont settle for 9800 or 9600 or 5500, go the 6200 route! you won't be dissapointed! and you'll need it for future games

Thanks for the advise. Just wonder if the eVGA and XFX are better brands than Leadtek? Which one will is easier to open the other 4 pipes and overclock better since they are within a few dollars range?

Also is the PCI Express version the same as the AGP and will work the same? Thanks!

I just bought the leadtek 6200 AGP. It's got 550mhz ram which is 3.6 ns so it'll probably OC a bit higher. Unfortunately, the ram is in a funny place so ramsinks might not be possible.

EDIT: i haven't recieved it yet though, bought from newegg. They'll probably go OOS quick. Pick one up while you can

If I don't OC the card and open the pipe, would the 6200 still beat the 9600XT or even the 9800Pro? Also do I need to add ram sink if I just open the extra 4 pipes since I am not too big a fan of OC graphic cards but I would not mind if someone woule teach me how to do it on this card. Thanks!

Just wonder if Chaintech 6200 this card is ok and is the store futurepowerpc ok too? Since I reside in CA, I don't have to pay tax with such store and I will save around $10 or so... any suggestion? It has HDTV out too, seems better than the leadtek!

How about this eVGA 6200 from Amazon? It has 256mb ram and is around the same price. Would it be better than the other cards? Thanks!

If you can use the PCI-E one, get it, because its cheaper but the same thing.

To unlock, the extra pipelines, you need to download a program called rivatuner, just search for it on google. And how to go about unlocking

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=841145

it should be the same process but instead of having the 4 pixel units (0,1,2,3), there should only be 0 and 1 (which 1 should not be checked. But I haven't done this myself because I'm waiting for the card from the mail. I should get it friday and get everything up and running early saturday, I'll post results.

hope this helps

EDIT: I hear that you shouldn't need any extra cooling, as the 6200 runs cool unless you do a massive OC

I agree thats a good option to go with, the 6200 is a beast for the price.

yeah, thats the one I bought, I was planning on waiting to recieve some paypal funds, but once i saw the chaintech go out of stock, i went ahead and bought it. i figure people are figuring out that the 6200 is an awesome deal. And the leadtek has higher stock memory speeds too (and I hear the cooling on it is very good)

Thanks very much! Now I narrow down to three choices, the Leadtek, Chaintek and eVGA. For me the Leadtek is most expensive cuz I have to pay tax for Newegg but it has better memory. Chaintech has HDTV output and eVGA has 256mb of ram. Any suggestion on which one I should get?

Also just wonder why the PNY version of 6200 is so expensive everywhere? It's like at least $30 more for the card than any other brands. Thanks!

I don't know anyone on hardforums, anandtech, xtremesystems.com who have the chaintech. However, someone here has the leadtek and leadtek is a good brand. I hear eVGA is just as good as leadtek as well.

I wouldn't spend the extra money on the 256 meg ram. The 9800 pro with 256 meg ram wias only like 1 fps faster = not worth $20 more.

Chaintek might be OOS because I heard Nvidia making new 6200's with the n44 core (no pipes to unlock)

You know what when I visited the Chaintech and Leadtek website to browse spec of the 6200 card, it list these cards have 128(256)mb or memory. What does that mean? Actually the eVGA is the same price as other cards so I just wonder if the 256mb memory would help or it will actually hinder the card performance? Also where do you find the info that Leadtek memory is faster than the Chaintech?

Now I just remember since I am using the little cube shapre barebone as my HTPC and it has a 250W PS only, will it be able to run the 6200 card? Thanks for the help!

hmmm...maybe i was wrong then about the leadtek faster, it's just that there's prrof that its 3.6 and currently unconfirmed with the chaintech.

usually when they make 256 meg verions of cards the memory is slower because its cheaper. However, It's more of a luck whether you get one with faster mem or not. (faster memoryis better because the 128 bit bus for the 6200 can't get memory to the core fast enough. So OC'ing memory for the 6200 will give a bigger boost. This is why the 6600GT is much faster then the plain 6600).

for the PS, the only way to see whether it works is to try the card. If you have a really good brand PSU, 250 will be good enough, but I hear cases where crappy 400 watt psu's don't work
