Unless you're after Dx10, I don't think the 8600GT can lay a finger on the 7950GT in terms of Dx9. The 8600GT is a few thousand points lower in 3dmark05, for instance.

Might want to add to your comment that it might only apply to BFG brand of cards.
I have the eVGA 7600GT and it's the quietest card I've hard for a while. The only time that I notice it running will be when I finished gaming and it's fan speed goes down, and that's when I realized that it's be spinning up at all lol.
If this BFG 7950GT is anything close to the XFX 5600GT I had, then forget it I am taking my money else where.
Very tempting, but I think I'm going to try holding out till Q3, and pick up a quad core and a DX10 card then.

I bought the 512mb one at fry's instead because I think for the extra $18 bucks it is worth it. Going to ebay my BFG7900GS 256MB so the upgrade cost will be a maximum of $50 after sellers fees, etc.. Final cost after rebate is $167.11 Shipped.
Depends what you have now. For me, I couldn't stand it any longer and had to upgrade. If you've got something that runs games somewhat ok, I'd hold out.

WOW, sounds like a great deal, to bad the tax make it $12.00 higher for me. However, if I do buy one it would be the 512meg version. I always wanted to try out this card and I find that the higher ram cards run a lot smoother then the lower ram versions.

The 7950GT KO from eVGA runs at 550MHz while this one (the BFG) runs at 565. Pairing both in SLI would supposedly force the BFG's clocks down to 550MHz. Shouldn't see any problems running in SLI (feel free to correct this statement).
I asked the same question earlier. After thinking about it, I'm starting to think the answer is "no" seeing as how I could dump the $150 into a future card that has the same performance as two of these in SLI, consumes less power, does DX10 and makes less noise.

X1900XTX is faster than the 7950GT. According to gpureview.com, a difference of about 800 points on the 3DMark scores.
However, the 7950GT is a lot cheaper as the cheapest X1900XTX is about $260.
Frys.com still has the 512MB version of this same card for $159.99 AR. The $40 rebate is good until 5/31.

That's a great deal. Too bad I already ordered the 256mb version. I'm only gaming in 1440x900, so the extra memory probably isn't as crucial I suppose.
Had to call and place my order since it rang up at 279 once I put it in my cart. But great find since I'm gaming at 1600 res. In for one.

Just got this card up and running. Fan isn't loud, at least by my standard. Certainly quieter than my old 6600GT AGP. I haven't overclocked my CPU or GPU yet (just got it all in today) and scored a 5200 in 3dmark06. After overclocking I'm looking at ~6000 from what I've seen of comparable setups.
Currently building a new rig (e6600) and I am considering getting a decent mid range DX 9 card now ($150-$200) and using that for 6-10 month until I have to move to Windows Vista. Not much point sinking the big bucks into DX10 if I will not be using it in the short term. Once I go Vista, I could drop the $300 on a nice DX10 card at that point.

Pretty much exactly what I'm doing. I'll probably wait another year for Vista support to improve. Right now it seems like a mess.
This runs a little hot (in the 80s on load - albeit in Florida summer heat), but seems stable and runs games smoothly.
I'm in the same boat as well. But waiting until July before I pick up a video card since I'm looking forward to the Q6600 price drop for my next build. However, if the 8800GTS 320MB version drops to around $200 with rebates around that time, I'd rather jump on one of them instead of a DX9 card.
Well it applies to any card that uses the nVidia reference cooling option, which BFG chose to use this time around, there's apparently an XFX edition of the 7950GT that's passively cooled (it's mentioned in the article), not sure if all XFX 7950GT's use this cooler though since it's sometimes referenced as the extreme passive edition.
Anyways, you can always buy an aftermarket cooler...I'm thinking about getting the 512MB version of this card and putting my Zalman cooler on it then putting it inside a P180 or some sort of noise killer case. Heh, I used to be able to deal with super-loud PCs, running Delta fans left and right, but for some reason I can't deal with the noise anymore...especially since I keep my PC in my bedroom.
