I'm torn between this versus the 7900GS for $99 at frys.com. It's slower but also a fair bit cheaper and I don't really game that much (hell, I have a 6800 but the most hardcore game I've been playing lately is Starcraft lol)

Good enough boost from a 6800? I'm doubting it :-/

how does this compare to the x850xt? is it worth the upgrade?
<<

Normally I'd say yes, I went from a 7600 to a X1900 because the lesser couldn't do widescreen games well. Of you see yourself running DX10 games on the upgraded system any time soon... wait for a DX10. If not, by all means get it, it's a great upgrade from those cards. SM 3.0 ftw.

the 7950gt is almost exactly 210% faster than a 6800Ultra, and is about 60% faster than an x850xt.

Still a good deal but might be a good idea to also invest in a quieter cooler if you don't want a noisy system. But a quieter card that's slightly more money might be worth it if you care about noise.

My card has a similar cooler(7900GT), it's only loud if you leave it at full blast. If you lower the fan speeds with Rivatuner you should be fine, but then again I don't know what you consider quiet.

Frys.com has the 512MB version for $199.99 with a $40 MIR. Comes out to be $159.99 AR. No free shipping at the moment however.

But for $10 more & shipping, you're probably better off getting the 512MB version.

Wow, hot deal on a fast card. Forget the 8600 series, this is a much better card for most games.

My 7900GS is fast enough for the small amount of games i play, and the fan is ultra quiet while in 2D mode, and only spins up fast during games which i can't hear over the sounds of the game.

I ordered this deal on Thursday. Should arrive mid-week. I spent a fair amount of time obsessing over the ~$150 price range. After a week this deal suddenly came up, and it was a no-brainer. Considering that the price is competing with 7600GTs and 7900GSs, it seems like a steal. Only the GTX and ATi's XT(X) offerings can edge this one out for Directx9 performance and they're a fair bit more expensive.

Is there any possible way to SLI this with a 7900GT, even by flashing to a 7900GT BIOS (if that would even work)? I'd really like to go SLI at this price as a cheap-ish upgrade, but 7900GT's are rarely available anymore.

I'd troll the 'For Sale' forum. I've seen them going for around this price +/- $10.

Your card has a much quieter cooler...I know what you mean about it spinning up, since most newer GeForce cards all do that crazy spin up when you play 3D, but the 7950GT is the noisiest of them all, just look at the noise chart, your card is on it too and overall system noise is considerably lower with the 7900GT vs the 7950GT.

The only card that's even close to being as noisy is the 7600GT

To put it in perspective, TWO of your cards in SLI are quieter than ONE of this card. Significantly quieter even.

As I responded to the person with the 7900GT, this card has a different heatsink/fan that's noisier than your heatsink/fan.

In fact, it's so much noiser that even TWO 7900GS cards in SLI are quieter than one 7950GT. Seriously, why do people keep posting how quiet their cards are when they own a completely different card!?

My 6800 is pretty quiet too and it doesn't even spin crazy fast when I load games anymore, but that's because I ripped off the stock cooler and put on a Zalman. And the noise levels on my 6800 has as much relevance to the noise levels on this card as your card does.

So, for the last time, if you own a 7900GS/7900GT/7800GTX/7800GT/6800Ultra whatever, you do NOT HAVE THE SAME HEATSINK/FAN so posting that your card is quiet doesn't mean that this card is quiet.

BTW, two 7900GT's in SLI are also quieter than a single 7950GT. Noticably quieter btw. In fact, the only thing that's louder than a single 7950GT is the 7950GT in SLI and the 7600GT in SLI (the 7600GT uses the same heatsink/fan but it runs a little cooler so it seems to be a wee bit quieter).

P.S. My Ti4200 runs quieter than this card too, but it has a dead fan, lol.

Is it worth it to pick one of these up and pair it up with an existing 7950GT, or would it be better to save up and pick up a better card in the future?

This is a really tempting deal...but I'd have to spend an extra $25 on a northbridge cooler (current one blocks cards from being inserted into a PCIe slot).

thanks :)

i guess i'll wait to see if anyone gets it and how loud the fan is....I REALLLY don't like loud fans, but would be willing to buy a 20 dollar vga heatsink to ameliorate that
