I have a lower-end gaming rig, that I'd like to put a better video card in, mainly as a test rig for games to test and see if I'll want to keep and play them on a higer-end SLI rig, running two 7800 GTs.

I'd like to be able to test out newer generation games with ease and half way decent graphics to try and get a feel for them and when all that is said and done the card will mainly be used for video watching.

Could the FX5900XT play newer games ok, just to get a fair idea, feel for them, or the 6200 OC, or what level should I at least use?

Remember I already have a SLI system for the real deal, so the name of the game here is just testing and keeping the cost down. I don't want to spend to much and I'd like to stick to BFG for their lifetime warranty.

THANKS

I wouldn't bother with any of the video cards in the Geforce FX range because with modern games using DX9 their performance is very bad. The Geforce PCX 5900 (which is a renamed 5900 XT) I tested for a couple of weeks had a very hard time beating even the Geforce 6200 TC which is pretty much the cheapest Geforce6 video card you can get.

3DMARK 2005
5900 = 862
6200 TC = 801

(800x600/1600x1200)

SERIOUS SAM 2

5900 = (114,47)
6200 TC = (107,44)

WORLD RALLY 2

5900 = (45,20)
6200 TC = (37,16)

EARTH 2160

5900 = (33,17)
6200 TC = (34,15)

GT LEGENDS

5900 = (24,10)
6200 TC = (26,11)

As you can see the 5900 has poor performance with modern games, even the regular 6200 which is faster than the 6200 TC used here will beat any Geforce 5900 XT for sure with DX9 games! :)
