the clock rate has nothing to do with how actually the cards will perform. if you guys try to benchmark it, you'll see that ocing at a overly high rate will not be beneficial. and one card clocked at the same speed as another will still give you different results. i was hoping ppl would post their scores instead of just the clock rate.

i think i fine tune mine down to 292.5/567 is the best result.

I do not think BestBuy lost much. The Ti4200/4400 is being phased out in favor of the Ti4200-8X which has faster memory than the 4200. They're just clearing out old inventory.

I have the similar VisionTek GF4 Ti 4200 128MB model. I have had the card clocked at 315/640 and I was running in windows just fine. I was afraid to push it though so I clocked it back to 300/600 for a round of 3DMark2001SE. I got a score of 11,282. Specs:

Epox 8K3A+
AthlonXP 1900+ @1.6GHz
512MB Mushkin Enhanced PC2100 (2-2-6-2)
VisionTek GF4 Ti 4200 128MB Det. 40.72
WinXP Pro DX8.1

Last night I ran 3DMark with my GF4 at 275/550 (my card's default settings now with it's BIOS reprogrammed) with SP1, DX9, and Det. 41.09 and got a score of 10,788. All other specs. were exactly the same.

BFG Ti4200 128mb, OC'd to max coolbits...3DMarkSE 11600, default clock gets ~10500.

EP-8K3A, XP1700 @ 1.6ghz 10x166, 256mb DDR CL2, DX8.1, v40.72 drivers.

I am noticing shakiness when at windows desktop with this BFG. Anyone else? Previous card (GF3) did not shimmer like this.

To OC a nVidia card use coolbits registry tweak to add overclocking tab to your advanced video card properties in windows. Search google for coolbits and you will find it.

I noticed it as well. bad 2D. I now only go as high as 1024X768 in window desktop. The output quality does not change in 3D, its just that you don't notice it cuz of all the stuff going on.

can't beat the $89!!

I am gonna get myself one of those good card some day!

I got my dud exchanged at bbuy. New one does 580mhz mem(highest I can set using nvHardpage) no problem.

As for cooling, there is really no point in exotic cooling for the core of the GF4. The factory installed orb stays pretty cool. They GF4 core itself has a physical limit of about 310mhz it seems. The Abit OTES fan does not show any better OC stats. Ramsinks may be a good investment since the card uses TSOP memory rather than BGA, so more heat is trapped by the packaging. But it is hard to justify for a $90 bargain card.

Got mine to 310/560 (stock cooling). 3dMark 2k1se was ~11000 marks, and ~10500 at stock. This is with an Athlon XP 1700+ @ 1.83 GHz, 166FSB, DDR333.

Mine gainward GF4ti4200 128mb 4ns memories, could be overclocked to 313\600 no problem and memories with better cooling could go over 600 bit

*bump Did you guys use stock cooling to get those o/c results or have ram sinks? How far can I go with only stock cooling?

I am using the stock cooler on the GPU but I did install some ramsinks on my memory chips. I used AS Epoxy to attach them.

How do I know my limit of o/c when using only stock cooling? As long as it doesn't artifact I am good to go right?

No artifacting is good. You can also setup a torture loop on your card. Set 3DMark2001 SE to benchmark on a loop (not demo) and turn off the splash screens between tests. Let it rip overnight. If it is still running in the morning with no artifacting then the o/c is more than likely good.

This is the primary way I tested my own o/c out.

Hehe, no - no artifacting is good. The absence of artifacting is good. Artifacting is not good.

Sorry, my grammar is the above post must be atrocious if you thought I said it was good.

All you need is good case ventilation you should not need extra cooling for that card.

You may need better cooling if you are having problems ie: your computer crashes or you see artifacts.
