BFG 8800 GTX OC 768MB vs 4890?

I was checking ebay and it's seeming I could upgrade to a 4890 for about $50 once I sell my current card.

I don't really game too much (Farcry and WoW are my two main along with some old one like Serious Sam, Doom 2/3 and Quake), but I was thinking now may be the time to recoup some of my 8800 GTX costs (I am the second owner).

I have a Opteron 165 @ 2.7GHz on a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum/SLI

OH no! CUDA does nothing for most people, and I don't know why any gamer would run a Linux OS.

CUDA actually has tons of uses. It's great for video encoding, for example. Linux has so many benefits, I don't know where to start.
 
well I guess for 50 bucks it isnt bad but with your cpu you wont come close to pushing the 4890 to its full potential especially if you are gaming below 1920x1200. in fact you arent even getting all the 8800gtx can do with that 2.7 opteron. personally based on the games you are playing I would just stick to what you have.

depends on his res. at 1920 sure there will be an improvement but it still wont be as huge as it could be with that cpu. if he is at 1680 then not much will change especially on minimum framerates since even the 8800gtx isnt even being fully utilized. below 1680 it would be a complete waste with that 2.7 opteron. plus the games he has listed dont even need an 8800gtx much less a 4890.
 
My 4850 ran fine with linux, I sold it and got something bigger maybe 7 months ago...did ATI break its linux drivers in later releases?

NV still has way better Linux support. Were you using Compiz fusion and OpenGL apps?

I dabbled with compiz but didn't use it much.

The only apps I ran were FF and Pidgin, lol.

Uh, yeah, I beg to differ. I don't know what's wrong with their drivers, but my Compiz performance is horrible and I frankly don't care to bother troubleshooting it; I don't use Linux much (rebooting is a nuisance).

I have to enable "benchmark" to get good performance on Compiz. If I don't have that, then I get about 26fps on all the animations. Fugly annoying. Nvidia support Shnvidia support. It's been like this for years, my 6800GT AGP and then my 8800GT and now my 9800GT.

If he only plays games he is not loosing anything. Nobody is gaming in Linux anyway.
 
I don't think he mentioned anything about CUDA or linux. They are nearly useless for over 99% of people. All he cares about is performance, obviously.

8800GTX 768mb vs 4890?

4890 by a decent margin I assume.
 
4890 is definitely worth $50 over the 8800GTX. Think about it. The 8800GTX is what... 3 generations old. And the 4890 pretty much destroys anything in NVidias current generation lineup of single GPUs, except maybe the GTX 285. ATI Stream will catch up with CUDA soon enough anyway.

Because the OP didn't mention anything doesn't mean knowledgeable members here can't bring certain things to his attention, does it?

Besides, the OP didn't explicitly say that all he cares about is performance. If that is indeed the case, that's fine. But please mention the other thing besides CUDA and Linux (as it was already mentioned) that directly has to do with gaming.

I'll mention the 4890 Advantage. DirectX 10.1. Can speed up certain games that support DX10.1. But at the OP's res, 4890 or it's equivalent is beyond fast enough already.

With your CPU and games played it won't matter much. Unless you have a profound reason to upgrade or are dissatisfied with the FPS in games with your current card spending money is wasting money. Especially when you're hitching it to hardware that can't make full use of what you have already (the 8800 GTX).
