bfg 7900gt running TOO COOL?

So i have been having a major issue where my comp screen goes black every now and then and i have to force turn it off and back on. so my thought was video card after some troubleshooting....so i email bfg tech support (i have bfg 7900gt), we email back and forth, and once i told him that the card was running at arounnd 37C constantly, he tells me:

I know that some cards have a problem if they are not hot enough. Can you
change the cooling a little so the card can get over 40C.

has anyone else had a problem with their 7900gt because it was running too cool? im really having a hard time getting it over 40C actually its kinda annoying.

I've heard of the 7900GT core having issues when run too cold, of course since it was sub zero degrees or so it's rather irrelevant for you...

Sounds like a load of crap to me. Like a few degrees C are going to make a difference in that temp range.

It's probably a defective card more than anything.

Uhhh people attach phase change cooling onto their GPUs, what are you worrying for? My 7800GT idles around 42, and I know that 7800GTs run hotter than 7900GTs. Don't worry. Tell the guy you work IT and you demand a replacement. They'll stfu.

Yeah of course, because you know when it cools down electrons move faster, and like, they move through the gpu to fast, so it kinda can't handle them running around that fast, so it just flips out and dies...

Or, actually, I'm just as full of ****** as the BFG tech 🙂

Lol, you guys have clearly never heard of the 7900 series 'cool bug' have you? Basically when the card goes below a certain temp at I believe bootup, or possibly at all, the card stops working, probably due to the probe inside misreading it as overheating.

uhh when you cool somthing down your slowing it down when it gets hotter is what your example was showing if i am correct.

Try overclocking the card to see if it runs more stable 😀

Seriously, though, if raising the temps via overclocking doesn't work, give them a call back.

Well, aside from the fact that I figured the sarcasm in my comment would be rather obvious, cooling does improve gate speed, since heat increases resistance 🙂

Smells like BS. Could be the temp sensor is just borked and it's actually running too hot maybe?

To get temp up, just turn off case fans, maybe seal up vents, and run prime95 and 3Dmark etc to boost case temp. That's probably the safest way. Or clog the GPU heatsink with dust/fluff.

haha, so much sarcasm in this thread. ill try getting it a lot hotter, ive tried overclocking it a bit but not only do the temps NOT rise when i OC the core freq, but the comp gets way too unstable for overclocking as little as i was. is it possibly a power thing? should i manually up the voltage to the card? im not sure if thats even a bios option [asus m2n-sli]. ill try overheating it tonight. - also, the idea about the monitor as good, but i know that the comp is messy when the monitor goes black - it is no longer running properly when it happens, and the monitor cant do that.
