BFG 7800GTX OC getting high temps and 3dmark 05 problem

so i'm trying to run 3dmark 05 (free edition) ... it goes thruough 2 of the tests and when it opens up the third one it just says a problem occured and the program shuts down.

Also my idle temps are 59C and it was 76C after those 2 tests.

What is going on here

hi, it can be a lot of things..
it could be...
1. the program had a bad install, so the files for test 3 could be corrupted, try it without running just that test or try reinstalling 3dmark05.
2. could be an older driver for your BFG 7800GTX OC which caused the crash, make sure it is the newest from their website.
3. do artifacts ever occur when you play games or run 3dmark05 (tests that do run?) then it can be the heat/damage on your card causing the problems
4. you said its hot, i have no idea what the temp of that card is suppose to be but that temp is hot enough to reheat food with, is your case temp hot also which can be causing the extreme temp? only this one program crashes? have you tried other graphic intensive programs to see if they also crash?

yes my case temperatures are ok, i have the latest drivers as well

do artifacts ever occur when you play games or run 3dmark05 (tests that do run?) can you loop just the tests that do run and see if artifacts occur/lockups/etc..only 3dmark05 crashes? have you tried other graphic intensive programs to see if they also crash? try other graphic intesive programs, etc. to see if it is a bad card that needs to be rma'ed.

Your load temp is fine. Your idle temp however is quite high. GTXs typically idle mid 40s-50 (w/ stock cooler).

Yes, your load temp is very acceptable. Some get into the low 80's...maybe try reinstalling 3D mark 05'

mine gets into the low 80s and idles at 50.. i need a new fan.. i artifact in cs source

mine crashed the first time I ran 3dmark05, then I ran the demo and then it ran all the tests fine. Strange but fine for me

i applied teh x2 patch and everythign runs through fine

i checked the temps with everest and they are like 10C lower than the ones i get from properties/settings/advanced/7800gtx


which do i trust?

my BFG 7800GTX hits 90-91C under load.. i know.. it sucks.. and i have excellent case cooling, my cpu ranges from 24C-26C..

Before you get all worked up about the card, make sure you try reinstalling 3DMark first. I had a problem like that once and all it took was a reinstall of the program to fix it.

and people say BFG are teh roxor......i think ive heard more BFG sob stories than XFX ones now

my XFX 7800's idle at 45......and theyre keeping each other warm! and they have a 50Mhz OC

I fixed it.. get this....

I decided to bite the bullet and take off my heatsink. Guess what, I had zero thermal compound or pads on the GPU. Is it supposed to? Anyone taken apart a stock BFG 7800GTX?

Well, I Arctic Silvered up all the ram and the GPU. Reassembled carefully. Well, I did the same rthdribl.exe as I was doing before. And Ive let it run now, for even longer than before.

Under heavy HDR load.

Before: 90-91C (It would reach this temp within 3 mins before.)

After: 76-78C (after 10-15 mins solid)


So, redoing my heatsink mount net me -12 to -13C. Killer.

What is this "X2" patch I keep hearing about ? I recently built my first AMD rig based on an X2 4800+ cpu, The only drivers ive installed are the Nforce4 drivers that came with my motherboard and the usual video/soundcard etc, running WinXP SP2. I've only ran 3dmark 05 once when I first got it running and it scored 8655 ,does that seem like a ballpark number for my setup? running a single EVGA 7800 GTX KO w/ 81.85 drivers , Nothing overclocked.

P.S. My 7800gtx's idle temp is 49C , havent tested full load temps yet but havent had any stability issues.
