BFG 6800 OC on a SFF Soltek Qbic Nforce2 - I can't install it :(

Hi guys! :)

I bought a brand new BFG 6800OC graphic about a week ago on Ebay and I have problems to get it to work.

My computer is a small form factor (SFF) PC from Soltek, the Qbic EQ3701M, equipped with the sl-b7a-f motherboard (Nforce2 chipset). I have the lastest Bios version. The CPU is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Mobile and I have 512Mb of Geil PC3200 Ram.

Up to now, I haven't been able to see some nice graphics with this card. Basically, after having installed it physically, I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my system partition, installed the Nforce system drivers, rebooted, installed the Nvidia graphic drivers. I have tried the drivers coming with the installation CD as well as the latest official ones and some non-official ones. This doesn't change anything to my problem: everytime that I boot my computer, everything runs fine... Windows begins to launch... the speed of the graphic card fans slows down and I get to the first prompt (the windows page showing the different users). This page is very badly displayed: sometimes it's just a blue page, sometimes it is almost normal, sometimes it isn't even displayed and the computer reboots. Anyway, with or without clicking, I am forced to reboot. Note that without drivers or running windows in VGA mode doesn't generate problems.

-My system memory doesn't seem to be the problem: I ran Memtest a night without errors.
-The card seems to be fully functional: the card was installed in another PC in a computer shop and would run a 3DMark05 test without problems.
-I don't think it is a power related issue: I tried all the molex connectors of a 300W PSU with minimal hardware connected on it.
-I don't think it's a software related problem: different drivers generate the same problem, as well as running a live version of Linux (Knoppix).

So I would suggest that the problem is related to the motherboard. I have never had problems like this with any of my ATI radeons on this motherboard before. I have changed almost all the parameters I could change in the Bios without improvments. I don't really know if the IRQ mentioned in the user guide is that important. When booting, the card seemed to have IRQ10 as well as 2-3 other components. When I boot in VGA mode, windows tells me it has IRQ19. I don't know if it is of importance... Perhaps my Soltek Motherboard is simply not compatible with my motherboard!

I have already spend a lot of time trying to fix this problem and cannot find help on the net. I have contacted BFG by email a couple of days ago with no success yet. So I thank you in advance for your help and suggestions. :)

1) do you have the power-supply cable plugged into the card to provide it its extra 12-volt power?

2) was the 300W power supply a top-notch one? Because I wouldn't try to run a 6800OC on anything under a 370W Enermax or another quality unit with above-average 12V amperage available  Even Shuttle is now plunking 350W units into their SFF's.

Honestly, I don't think it is the problem...
This article shows that an ati r9800pro consume more power than a nvidia 6800nu.
Before, I was running an Radeon 9800 Pro o/c and a o/c Athlon xp + all my other peripherals with my Shuttle 250W PSU.
Now, I just have the motherboard, the hardrive, a cd burner, the stock bfg 6800oc card, and the 300w psu out of my case and it doesn't work...

By the way, the molex connector is plugged. Otherwise an annoying biiiiiiiiiiiiiip reminds me to do it! You think this bip would be heard if there was not enough power?

From X-Bit's article...
The only problem with graphics cards on new NVIDIA GPUs is their high load on the +12v power rail, which may be too much for your PSU.
New graphics cards on ATI?s chips have a more ?balanced? consumption, so you shouldn?t run into any trouble with your current not-very-powerful, but high-quality PSU.
What is your 300W test unit, what brand and model?

Oh... I see!

This is basically a Enhance 300W 1125BTA R300 that I borrowed, thinking my Shuttle PSU was not enough. It delivers 13A on the 12v ramp.
The Shuttle 250W PC40 PSU delivers 16A on the 12V ramp.

It doesn't change anything if I use one of them or the other. :(

Gut feeling: you need more (high-quality) 12V amperage than either one is providing. And of course that's a major impasse when the Qbic won't take just any power supply :(

I'm not an SFF expert, so you might check in the SFF section of the Forums and see if the guys have any further input to offer. But I can tell you that I've noticed a trend with the current-gen nVidia cards and PSUs that used to cut it, not cutting it anymore. Good luck! :)

YES! I don't quite believe it yet, but I replaced the capacitor by a new one with slighly different characteristics and it works :D :D
