Yesterday morning my wife informed me of an issue with our computer downstairs. This computer happens to run her embroidery software and all the other "critical" issues like games and applications for the home. She described the problem as the desktop has vertical lines all across it and the icons are breaking apart as is the mouse cursor. Well I was thinking RAM is going bad and didn't have time to do anything other than shut down the system and tell her not to touch it as I was leaving for work.

So I get home yesterday afternoon and start checking contacts and such while we waited to go to my son's football game. It booted fine but then after about a minute the screen went loopy once more only this time I could not get past the WinXP screen on a restart. So I shut it down and wait about 5 minutes then restart again. Same situation once more. Then we have to leave for the game. Jump forward till 9:30 last night.

I get home and try it once more. I restart the computer only this time I get about 30 seconds of WinXP desktop then black screen. Now I notice a funny smell. I shut down and pop open the case and it hits me like a farm...whew that sucker smelled worse than 3 dead mice in a box for a week....Yes I have smelled that before.

I try to pull the card and its frigginHOT!!!!! So I wait a few minutes and pull it on out. I see the back of the card and its distorted and warped just behind the chipset. My Abit Ti-4400 has finally bit the dust. The little $2 chipset fan died on the card and practically became part of the heatsink.

SO my question is should I get that BFG 6800 OC 128MB card? Is it worth it or should I go for a cheap fix (sub $100 range) as I don't have the funds for a 6800GT 256MB card and can't wait on a 6600GT in AGP and don't want to drop the money now on a 939 motherboard with a new 939 A64 chip with a PCI-E slot.

It's not a bad price for the card. If you want to avoid tax and can wait a few days for shipping, Outpost also has it for $250. CircuitCity or CompUSA (can't remember which) has the PNY 6800 for $250. I think the PNY has a beefier HSF than the BFG, which you might prefer.

But yeah, it's probably worth the extra money over, say, a 9800P at retail.

Thanks Pete! Placing the order now and I wish I could wait but the wife needs the machine running tonight to get her business back on track.

That is a pretty good deal. For $250, there is nothing really to compete with the 6800nu's and if you are lucky, you might get one that softmod's properly and will gives you the full 16 pipelines and 6 vertex pipes. I am extremely impressed with my Chaintech AA6800 (6800nu) that modded successfully and overclocked to a excellent 430/920.

The BFG is also a good choice because it has a lifetime warranty. Sofmodded mine easily...I got mine at Outpost a month ago for 250...no complaints.

Or pick up an evga @ circuit city for $279 w/ $20 or $30 rebate. Mine ended up being able to be unlocked 16x1, 6 and clocked to 380/939 stable. Too bad I had to return it since I went in on the dell deal this past weekend. I'd go for the 6800 vs sub $100 card, you'll be happy you did.

Or you could jump on the latest bandwagon, fork out the 339 for a 6800LE and flash the bios to an Ultra. It seems to be the popular thing this week.

Well wI just got it installed and it seems to work great in my games so far. Rome Total War rocks without jagged little people running around. Also the price went up to $255 because Best Buy said they had a typo on the website.

Yep its a nice card and does the games I play nicely. No more jagged edge little men in Rome Total War or boxy looking aircraft in the flight sims either.
