The $40 version comes with the 3 booster packs. Do people actually play these packs or is just a waste of money?

just the vanilla version. i got special forces or whatever it was called when it came out.
one thing with getting the expansions is that when you are able to unlock stuff, you have more choices and i like some of those choices better than the regular ones. for instance, i like the special forces sniper rifle better than the other 2 and the f2000 or whatever its called over the m16 or the other assault rifle.
i only played one map but I actually did pretty well, at least compared to how i used to do.

With the expansion (Special Forces), you get access to tier 2 unlocks to use while playing regular BF2. (but oddly enough you can't use tier 2 unlocks in SF games). So players in a regular BF2 game who own SF will have tier 2 unlocks but can play with players who don't have SF and thus don't have the unlocks. Now this seems kind of unfair IMO, considering that even after some balance changes, some of the tier 2 weapons seem far better than tier 1 unlocks. I tend to do way better with some tier 2 unlocks like the G36E, tier 2 sniper, and F2000. And you often see the people with real high scores using the same arguably overpowered weapons. Note that regular BF2 offers the tier 1 unlocks.
When I was a BF2 noob and got owned in vanilla, I went out and bought SF mainly at the time because I wanted the cool weapons I kept getting owned with! Suffice to say, even though I did get a lot better, I still feel I play better with a couple of those tier 2 weps.
Technically, you don't need to buy SF to get the unlocks. A friend who owns it can unlock them for you then you get from then on.
But I am very glad I bought SF, not only for the unlocks, but because I enjoy the majority of the SF maps but just a minority of the BF2 maps. I can't comment on the two booster packs. The problem with all 3 of them is that it segregates the players. The unpopular ones (Euro Force is the least popular I hear) have very few servers. Luckily, SF had enough servers where I could always find a one with a low ping. But the number is many times smaller than the # of regular BF2 servers.
In short, if you are unsure of how much you'll like the game, you might want to just get the $20 one. If you have played the demo and plan to play the hell out of it, and want much more variety, I'd get the $40 package. Also, you might wait for more comments or try searching old threads on the topic. If people claim there are enough servers for the expansions and booster packs, I'd get the $40 deal, otherwise regular BF2 should offer you enough for many hours of play.
