I have mostly played BF2 for the last several years. I highly prefer the Desert Conflict mod over vanilla. But often when I am ready to play, the servers are empty. (Please visit the GFC Gaming site if you are at all interested in a game of BF2 capture the flag!)
I tried some COD4, but find the infantry only limits the fun somewhat, and the smaller maps makes it feel like I'm in the middle of an old Quake deathmatch. I prefer bigger maps and a little slower pace, because I feel it adds the ability to bring some strategy to bear. It's not just whoever twitches faster wins.
Anyway, I have both Frontlines: Fuel of War and Enemy Territiry: Quake Wars on my shelf. Ideally, I am looking for advice from a BF2 fan that has played both of these newer games, but if you have any exposure any of these games, your input is welcome.
Both of these new games seem to have a lot of classes/load-outs/vehicles to try out. As a fan of and experienced player of BF2, which of these new games do you think I should I invest my time in trying to learn first? Which do you think would be the most fun?

Thanks!

There is nothing like the goodness that is BF2 out right now, we will most likely have to wait for BF3. In the meantime, I hear that the user made mod Point of Existence for BF2 is really good. BF2 has an extensive mod community, so the community should be generating enough content to hold one over until BF3.

ET: QW has some of the same team based and objective based aspects as the BF series though the maps were slightly smaller but maybe that has changed since I last played. I haven't played Fuel of War so I can't comment on that game. IMHO give ET: QW a try and see if you like it. Of course BF 2 is still king of the hill IMHO.

ET: QW is ok, although IMO the vehicle combat in BF2 is far better - the vehicles in QW (at least in the demo) don't have much oomph - maybe more guns, but you still die pretty damn fast. I was disappointed with how quickly that big Strogg mech thing can be destroyed. DICE seems to have a knack for large-scale gameplay.

I played POE 2 back when it first came out. IIRC, it was the first "total conversion" mod released for BF2. I played hours of the infantry-only forest map that was in their first release. I haven't played it in more than a year, and I know I saw news of some updates to it. They probably have a bunch of new maps now.

I have played a lot of mods for BF2 including: POE 2, Desert Conflict, Forgotten Hope, NAW, AIX, BOM SF, and Project Reality. They rise and fall in popularity. Now that there are so many mods, it can be tough for one mod to maintain more than a few populated servers on a consistant basis. I know Project Reality has a pretty big following, with 300-400 people on at just about any time, but reality does not always = fun.

I'll check out POE 2 again to see how it is. Thanks.

its a big dry spell for pc shooters. cod4 is a joke. there is nothing quite like the bf series i guess. i play 2142 but a lot of people dont like futuristic shooters.

right now my clan is trying to drum up interest in POE since version 2.5 came out and it looks good, but its hard to get people we know to install bf2 again caue the cone of fire was so flippin ghey

I like QW. The game seems very slick and well finished, and I like it for casual gaming.

Check out Armed Assault. Vanilla game is shit, but with mods and customization it's a shittong of fun.

Ever tried Allied Intent Extended mod for BF2 (AIX)? It's a ton of fun with new weapons and maps etc. Once you try it, you'll never go back to vanilla.

No you don't need gamespy. In fact I don't know of any game that requires it for you to play online.

I tried it. It was fun. I definately find it harder to play vanilla now-a-days. I'm not a big fan of the night/dark maps though, which they have a lot of. It encourages and rewards camping.

Project Reality used to be excellent but then they started to get too clever and made a mess of the mod.

Im also looking for a newer BF2 game and have tried QW, Armed Assault, Frontlines:Fuel of War and they are really poor, i just hope they hurry up and make BF3 because im losing the will to live and dont really have any games to play.

im currently loving World in Conflict and that is it. i need my fps, driving tanks, flying choppers and planes fix!
