According to this thread as well as other forum topics, there seems to be an issue with the OpenAL driver included with BF2 on Audigy cards.
Most of that thread, well up the page 8 or so when I stopped dealt with crashes and sound problems. I don't have those with BF2, but I do have an Audigy 1 eX soft-modded to a Audigy 2 ZS. All that really means is that I can use A2 ZS drivers.
Does anyone know if replacing the OpenAL.dll improves performance? Since I am not experiencing problems I'm not gonna bother unless theres some sort of improvement elsewhere. I do NOT have XP SP2 yet, which I see listed as a requirement for the latest Audigy beta OpenAL driver, which from Creative claims an increase in performance for OpenAL games. This interests me, but I wanna get other opinions before I go and get SP2 and try all that. Of course, is SP2 really required? I've never heeded the "Must use SP2" warnings according to some app and driver pages, and I've never had a problem using them with SP1.
