To second the summary theres been some nice threads in the video forum here about ram and the game BF2. This is just a summary of my expierences vs expectations. I recieved my 2 gigs today and I allready feel comfitable saying that the 3rd or 4th map bug (you stay on the same server after 3 or 4 maps you start lagging) is cured. I also turned eye candy up with no adverse effect. Guys it dosnt turn dark into light but it does do those 2 things. If your interested please check out the video forum here. Theres some very good work done there.
I thought based on those threads that it was time. I got just exactly the preformance increase that I expected.

By nice, you mean jumping to conclusions with little real evidence? I agree that loading will be faster, since less OS stuff has to be cached to make room for BF2, but after the game is loaded it does not use 1GB fully.

Ok, loading isnt any faster. At least on my system. The difference is what I said in the origional thread. On the same server that rotates games after each win. I would start lagging after the 3rd or 4th map loaded. My hard drive is running at this point (i assume I'm paging). This is with 1 gig of ram. With 2 Gig of ram this no longer happenes. Also with video settings on high i would start lagging with 1 gig of ram. 2 gigs and I no longer expierence this. If you think the work those guys in the video forum did was jumping to conclusions I guess I can understand that. We agree to disagree? ok? Im not arguning that this bodes good programming, only what my experience has been vs my expectations. Based on those threads this is exactally the preformance increase I expected. I just wanted to say to the community that that is exactly what I experienced.

Big picture: RAM is stupendously affordable right now. 1GB of value RAM for under $90? Shoot, I remember paying $396 for a 256MB stick of PC133  Load up while the loading's good, that's what I say. You watch, come back-to-school and Christmas, it'll be significantly higher.

To the above poster. Yes I've been thinking about this sence november. 2 1X 1gig kingston value ram ddr333 for $198 delivered by newegg? I went for it. Not the hardest puter upgrade to justify.

I get a few seconds of stuttering, I assume it's the video card getting the texture data from system RAM. It gets smooth after 2-3 secs and changing maps seems not to do anything. My longest pause is the "Verififying client data..", which has nothing to do with RAM. I will get 2GB for my next upgrade, but I do a lot of work too. I use duel 3.6Ghz Xeons with 2GB at work.
