BF:1942 framerate gets lower when I lower resolution? please advise

I have a compaq laptop, mobile P4 1.6 mobility radeon 32mb 7500 and 384mb that barely plays this game, but i get ~20fps. If i lower the game to 800x600 640x480 the framerate drops. Is this because they are non native resolutions of the screen? Is there anything i can change?
